Was he only a kicker in high school? What other position did he play in football? I wasn't aware he played other sports. Actually, I don't remember him as a standout athlete in high school in any sport, including kicking. But that it probably just bad memory or not paying attention by me.

Pelfrey Did not play on the 89' Scott team he graduated in 88. He was a nice 3 sport athlete. I know he was the starting QB his JR/Sr yrs, starting guard on the basketball team and an oitstanding Centerfielder in baseball. I remember a cold blustery day back in 88 out in Taylor Milk pitching against the Eagles. My coach tells me 15 minutes priori to the game that I was pitching because the regular had tightness. Longtime Reds scout Charley Leftin was there in his lawn chair scouting Pelfrey. I ended up throwing a 3 hitter, we win 8-1 and all three hits given up were to leadoff hitter Scotty Smith. I sat Pelfrey down on strikes twice. The wind was blowing in that day im not gonna lie as I got a bunch of fly outs but Pelfrey must've have been a very Good baseball player if Leftin was there watching. Mr. Leftin was a great guy as Well, I got to know him through all the years competing against his grandson and another top athlete in Jeff Leftin of Beechwood. RIP Mr. Leftin.

89 team was led by a stud freshman named Chris Haynes, we played them in the First round of Regional tournament at Holmes and lost by 15 I believe. My final game and it was a stinker shooting night in the Big gym for myself. Smith boys, Mark Kirby and Haynes went on to beat Holy Cross in finals for their one and Only Regional title ever.

I figured since it was Hoops season this was the best forum to place this in. That being said, the last two years NewCath's Brady Hightchew is by far the most talented 3 sport athlete in NKY. So who from the past are some of the best ever to maybe hold this distinction?

 

....when you say "talent", I assume you are only speaking about his athletic abilities and not "total athlete" package ? Great physical athlete, with pure ability, but a great athlete also displays great sportsmanship as well as athletic abilities. I would disagree that all these criteria would necessarily be met.

Ponzer was very good and definitely a great competitor, but his team mate was an incredibly gifted talent - Billy Meyer. You can see why that SK team won a state championship - McKinley plus very gifted multi sport athletes in Ponzer, Meyer and Mullins.

Yes Jeoff and Jon Long both 3 sport atheletes, Also my brother Ken Dunhoft from Lloyd and especially Jelani Brandon from Lloyd back in the 60's there were several at LLoyd and all Northern Kentucky schools. I just can not remember all their names however like I said there were several from all over NKY. JD

Good point JD, if I am not mistaken, Geoff was all state at all three sports while at Lloyd, not to mention signing what would be a multi million dollar contract when he graduated in what, 1958. Held the record for most HR's in triple A ball while in the farm system for the Cardinals, had a hard time sticking with the big team, had this guy named Musial in front of him at first.
