That is such an important game for the entire region. A district winner is going to have to face one of those teams in the first round. Almost makes you think the 38th outcome today made a lot of teams give a sigh of relief that they won't have to play PC or HC as a district winner.

 

The 37th district will come down to the Feb 10 game at Scott when the Eagles play Brossart. Scott wins they are the number one seed and get the Calvary/Silver Grove winner while Campbell plays Brossart in an elimination game. If Brossart wins then we have a three way tie as CC has beaten BB and Scott has beaten CC. Then there would be a draw/coin flip for the one seed.

I'm guessing that we're in the minority here, but that has been my thinking for years and years.

 

And I would agree with you if IF only one team then went on to the Region but to allow a team that is far inferior to the others, to get into the Regional Tourney, just because they got lucky in the blind draw, is just sad!

Yes - Only the District Winner goes Regionals (4 games to get to Region). If Team Lucky wins two games to be District winner, then that is the was that it falls out.

Who votes to seed or to draw within each district?

They usually play St. Patrick and Bracken County most years anyway. The last few years they've had Deming on their schedule, why not play Augusta instead? It makes zero sense for Augusta, Bracken, and St. Pat to vote for a draw. Often times the better team of those three in a given year draws the short stick. Those three teams play each other many times during the season anyway. Why not make them count and seed it.

 

Mason has not played Bracken or Augusta in the regular season in the last four years (if you count this year). They've played St. Patrick twice in that time span (regular season).

I agree that they should seed.

Think of the gate $$$ that the 10th loses if Pendleton County doesn't make it. They have as good a following as anyone in the 10th.

I actually had a conversation with someone today who said this same thing. Yes, according to him, Pendleton voted against seeding in their previous district.

I know in our district, it is a blind draw. The only schools that complain about seeding and/or want seeding is NCC and Highlands. Bellevue, Dayton, and Newport vote for blind draw. I know this may not be the issue in most districts, but in our district Highlands and NCC have won it more than anybody else so seeding or blind draws do not have an impact on the district tournament.

 

The only time there is a major uproar is when Bellevue/Dayton play and the winner advances to the final, thus moving on to the Region. But for small schools it's nice to get a shot at the region tournament, especially for the funds that it will bring in.

 

I definitely see where Newport, Bellevue, & Dayton are coming from, and agree with them. However IN ALL HONESTY that's the ONLY way one of them will make it to the Regional, if NewCath and Highlands are in the same half of the bracket. The only thing that that guarantees is a second round regional game for whoever draws Newport, Bellevue, or Dayton. Yes Newport was legit in 2010, other than that you get "butkus" from these three. Nothing against these schools, their players, coaches, etc..... But seriously, when was the last time one of these three (other than Newport in 2010) won a game in the 9th Region tourney???? Went on KHSSA website back to 1999.......Zip. Sorry if I offend anyone, but I call it how I see it.

See post #31. I totally agree with MNCM. I also so think that the whole state should just go one way or the other (hopefully Blind Draw). I also agree with TOG in that if you do the Blind Draw then only the District Champ moves on. I think it was a Blind Draw statewide until about the 80s and everything worked out ok.

They may be unseeded in the region, but district #1's play #2's so you don't have district winners playing other district winners in the 1st round.

I think Mason County is opposed to seeding as well, because they don't want to be forced to play the other three class A schools at least once every year. At least, that's what I have been told.

The notion of coin flips determining seeding seems incongrous to me. We're talking about how seeding is the fair way to go as opposed to a blind draw; yet no one has objections to a coin flip (in essence a blind draw itself) determining the #1 seed in the 40th, or determining who may stay home in the 37th?

 

To use a phrase I've often heard, there seems to be a disconnect here.

And to be clear, I really don't have a dog in this fight. The regional tournaments are essentially unseeded, the state tournament is unseeded; most of the district tournaments are seeded. While we can ponder the notion of sending only district winners to the regional tourney, regions simply aren't going to give up 4 of their 7 games. In the districts that go with the blind draw, the individual schools have their reasons for voting the way they do; and they're not always the same reasons. While I like the notion of Cinderella teams making noise in the post-season, I can understand how the supporters of the losing team in (for example) the Harrison-Pendleton matchup wouldn't be crazy about the blind draw.

 

But if one of the aims of a regional tournament is to send the best representative to the Sweet 16; again, I agree with MCNM's premise that you have to play 'em sometime; and championship-quality teams find a way to win 'em.

 

PS - doesn't it take (in a 4-team district) a vote of 3-1 or 4-0 to "overturn" the current method (seed or draw) of determining regional qualifiers. If so, is it realistic to think that (for example) Deming and/or Nicholas County will change their mind any time soon?
