St X vs Trinity Football - Is the gap between them real or perceived?

Featured Replies

What do you think?

Trinity has won the last few with the Tigers by a bunch, but a look since 2000 shows the following......

Here are the facts:

-Since 2000, they have played one another 19 times

-Trinity has won 12

-St X has won 7

-Trinity has averaged 21 points per game

-St X has averaged 17 points per game

-Is Trinity riding a "hot" 3 or 4 year cycle that will swing back to St X? Or, have the programs fundamentally shifted to swing toward Trinity?

To help answer this question, fill me in on where St. X and Trinity get their students. Are there geographic boundaries/districts for each or can anyone in the greater Louisville area choose which one they attend?

I think you very well put it all into focus. From your facts, there appears to be not much of a seperation at all. Recent success from an extraordinary bunch.

Based on the stats, I would say perceived. The Tigers will definitely be back again.

The Catholic schools in Louisville, no matter the grade level, can take students from any part of town, or the surrounding counties or even southern Indiana if the families want to make the financial commitment for them to attend. By that same token all need based aid is done by a company chosen by the KHSAA out of state to go over the families' financial records to determine the financial awards. No one gets better than 50% aid no matter who they are. I was once told by someone close to the program that Michael Bush shadowed at Trinity and wanted to attend, but on account of his family's financial situation the aid that they would have received would not have been sufficient to cover expenses.

There are no boundaries and no feeder schools. I recall not understanding what he was talking about when a friend of mine from Covington was telling me about how the fact that he went to St. Augustine for grade school meant that he was in the feeder system to go to Holy Cross. No concept like that here in Louisville.

Even hearing folks talk about the idea of being restricted by what schools you can or can't attend based on your place of residence, to this day, sounds odd to me. I went to grade schools far from my home St. Joe's, St. Therese and then St. Rose before I ended up at Trinity for high school.

I believe Mater Dei and Memorial in Evansville are tied to certain parishes as well.

Are the tuition costs and amount of financial aid available about the same at each school?

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I ask about boundaries is if one school becomes dominating, it could snowball into a wave of the top athletes choosing that school if there are no restrictions. So while St. X has been able to have some success in the not too distant past, if Trinity were to continue to dominate for another couple of years, then it could have an impact.

And vice-versa, as I feel is the more prevelant situation here between X & T. One of the schools gets dominant, kids start trickling toward the other, who then becomes dominant, and on and on. As Oxnard says...it's a pendulum.

I think the difference is coaching. Obviously St. Xavier is very well coached but Trinity is coached about as well as a high school team can be coached and they are much more creative on offense. The result is with close to equal talent Trinity is going to win a lot more often than not and stud athletes choosing between the two schools are going to go to T over X more often than not.

Not sure of the funding for financial aid at X, but I would think a bit more was available, given the much larger alumni base. The last I checked, tuition was a bit more at X than T, but not a HUGE disparity.

The Trinity Foundation has been making a big push to increase the amount of aid it gives out. This year I believe Trinity gave out as much or more aid as X.

The last two years the gap has grown. You cannot argue that the talent level in football and now basketball is significantly higher. Trinity has always focused on football but wait till you see basketball squad. When Szabo was hired I specifically remember him saying, "With 1,300 boys we should be better..." Well he was wrong. The sweet 16 team a while back was put together by someone with Oldham County kids and couple good CSAA kids and now he has kids from everywhere. Nothing wrong with it, just a different focus. I am not sure what X will do but I don't see us entering "Arms" race.
