The Trinity Foundation has been making a big push to increase the amount of aid it gives out. This year I believe Trinity gave out as much or more aid as X.

 

Does this mean more students get financial aid or more $ per student? I only ask because if I was choosing a Catholic school, considering they are both very good academically, one of the factors would be cost.

Both. The available money is divided by the total need and then everyone gets that same percentage of their need. Need for each family is determined by an out of state service approved by KHSAA.

The reality is X continues to dominate in attracting the country club sports kids(tennis,golf,Xcountry) and has fallen behind T in the two most prestigious sports(Fball and Bball)

Unless X sends out a lineup with all CSAA kids next year then I don't think they can say a thing and I can guarantee their football team has several Non-CSAA kids.

Oldham Co. kids have been going to Trinity for decades. If you were specifically talking about the Saxton twins, I believe their parents decided on leaving the overcrowded (at that time) Oldham Co school district for high school before Szabo showed up. I will have to ask their father the next time I see him but pretty sure that is correct.

The Catholic schools in Louisville, no matter the grade level, can take students from any part of town, or the surrounding counties or even southern Indiana if the families want to make the financial commitment for them to attend. By that same token all need based aid is done by a company chosen by the KHSAA out of state to go over the families' financial records to determine the financial awards. No one gets better than 50% aid no matter who they are. I was once told by someone close to the program that Michael Bush shadowed at Trinity and wanted to attend, but on account of his family's financial situation the aid that they would have received would not have been sufficient to cover expenses.

 

You are 90% correct. There are approx five approved companies for calculating financial need. The Archdiocese of Louisville is currently using PSAS (Private School Aid Service), one of the approved companies.

 

Also, due to improved fundraising by the Trinity Foundation, families can now get about 60% of financial need met.

I think the difference is coaching. Obviously St. Xavier is very well coached but Trinity is coached about as well as a high school team can be coached and they are much more creative on offense. The result is with close to equal talent Trinity is going to win a lot more often than not and stud athletes choosing between the two schools are going to go to T over X more often than not.

 

I agree with Guru. The schools recruit from the same areas but Beatty may be getting the better players among the "not committed by father" group. Many students will go to StX because their fathers, borothers or other relatives went to StX. Others may go to Trinity for same reason. However, there are students whose parents moved to Louisville or have parents who went to neither school. Beatty may be getting these players because he is a more creative coach.

Next year Trinity SHOULD beat StX two times based on anticipated rosters. Trinity may go ahead in games won for first time in 56 year history. However, I do not see big difference in talent two years from now. For us old timers

Trinity is simpky having a good run on victories.

St. X also seems to hamstring themselves in their hiring practices. This is not just in football but in all sports they seem to be determined to hire only "X-Men". If and when Glaser ever decides to step down I think X is more likely then not to hire someone with some connection to X. That being the case I wouldn't look for a whole lot to change.

Having worked the Phonathon at X for several years, I can say that about 30% at X get aid. I understand it is limited to 50% of tuition. The applications are sent to a college review company, and that is the amount of aid provided. X has no input.

 

X will not accept money, be it cash, check, etc. unless you are the responsible party, so I couldn't pay tuition for a neighbor or relative, etc.
