Hey bballfanky, Grey and Turkeyfoot do have nice 8th grade teams but I don't think that their great. Highlands 8th grade beat Turkeyfoot and only lost by 2 pts to Grey during Grey's Holiday Tourn. HMS had a player just returning from a elbow injury and a few kids under the weather during this Tournament. The majority of these kids at HMS played on the NKY Jazz and this group did quite well against the Patriots. So I don't think you should crown Boone Co. region champs just yet!

 

I just wanted to note 3 or 4 of the better 8th grade teams in NKY at this point. Highlands should also be in the mix. They also have some good players. Ockerman beat Gray by 5 in their first meeting this year. A lot can still change in the next few years, and only time will tell. One good player moving in could make a contender even out of a weaker team.

I do remember Heathie "Herkey" White, I coached him in the old boys club league. I wished he would have stayed at Newport, But the Wildcats are never going to keep great players of his caliber if they don't get them a Coach or a Coach that the youngmen want to play for.

Eighth grade success doesn't always mean success at the high school level. Look at the current senior class at Dixie & Scott. The Turkeyfoot and Woodland were top of the class and staged some great games and the great things were predicted for both high schools from these feeder schools.

 

Scott & Dixie both appear to be solid programs and very good players still remain in each program, but I don't know if either has reached the level that was predicted from the middle school success.

 

Kids move out, other sports take precedence, priorities change, puberty finally evens out the playing field.

Good points CC, but if you remember those "great" Turkeyfoot and Summit View teams built gaudy records against no one. They never played the AAU tourneys or against the Catholic schools/teams. I think they just played each other and the Boone feeders. Never tested themselves against any Cincy or downstate teams of note!! I remember some of the St. Pius middle school teams (and they weren't even the best of the NKY teams) scrimmaging against those "great" Turkeyfoot teams (Sam Lawson era I believe), doing quite well and then never seeing them again; until reading about their 2?-0 undefeated season in the paper.

 

"To be the best, you've got to play the best"--Even if you take some on the chin along the way!!

Gray vs. Highlands 1-2

 

I don't know Ockerman, Turkeyfoot, and Highlands record against each other, maybe someone can enlighten us. All games have been close between these schools.

 

As for the Catholic schools, Gray is the only public school in the St Joes tourney next week. We will see how they do then.

 

You can throw out the AAU records because Gray has two AAU teams, Ockermans AAU plays with kids from other areas of the state, most of Turkeyfoots team plays together but one of their best players plays for someone else.

 

As another post says, a lot can change over the next few years. Kids transfer, move in, grow, stop growing, improve or don't improve and so on.

According to the KHSAA:

A student who becomes nineteen (19) years old before

August 1 shall be ineligible for interscholastic athletic

If the kid is so good that he is playing freshman basketball, why is he suiting up for the 8th grade game?

What's the point? Is a regular season 8th grade game so important to a program that you bring a kid down a level to win this game. Wonder if the Varsity coach had imput on the decision. Seems if the young man is so talented, the move would be to play him up ( JV or Varsity). There are plenty of programs that play kids up, Highlands included, I do not recall to many of them playing up and then returning to their level just to win a game. Last year HHS had a Freshman playing Varsity. Would he have helped the Freshman team, especially in the Frosh tourney? No doubt he would have. But what would be the point? Anyway good luck to the young man, sounds like he has a lot of potential. Hopefully the adults in his life do whats best for him, not themselves.

I agree, But no matter what, the Bluebirds-vs-Wildcats Tuesday night. There's alot of talent on both teams and most of the youngmen are friends or know each other. Win or Lose it will be a great night for Boys 8th Grade Basketball.
