BGGreen... Do you know why the publics and parochials don't play each other in middle school? I don't get it, and I've always wondered why they aren't able to mix their schedules more like the Frosh.

 

The best answer to this is the size of the schools. Most Catholic Schools have a large amount of feeder schools compared to public schools. Holy Cross which is 3 or 4 times smaller than Scott and Dixie has more feeder schools than those two high schools combined. So the talent is spread alot more thin.

Highlands 8th grade rolls over Holmes this morning by 15+. Their really playing well as a team! Holmes knocked HMS out of the Tournament last year.

Hey bballfanky, Tell us about the Gabbard and the Flannery youngmen. How good are they and where will they attend High School??

 

Gabbard, Flannery, Popp, and Earls will attend Boone. In my opinion, Popp and Gabbard will be, and have been, the best guard combination in N KY in their class. Gabbard has good handles, and Popp is a good defender and unselfish assist maker. Both are quick, can score as necessary, and can break defenses down and get losts of open looks for their teammates. Both have and are playing together in AAU ball and compliment one another. With these two and Josiah Schultz, this guard trio is hard to guard. Flannery is the best 3 point shooter in his class in Kentucky and has won 2 national three point shooting AAU contests and owns a state AAU three-point shooting record. He also almost broke the D2 8th grade state tournament three point shooting AAU record as a 7th grader last year. He would have broken it if one of the teams hadn't forfeited. He is the second leading scorer on the Kentucky Patriots AAU team that has won state the last two years and finished 15th in the nation. He has led the Ockerman team in scoring the last three years, although Ockerman has fairly balanced scoring between Flannery, Earls, and Popp.

I watched Scott's AAU team knock off the "great" Rockets in Lexington in the State AAU tournament. I believe the Rockets were a combination of St.Pius and Blessed Sacrament. These were all good players and teams. There is no reason to implicate that the public schools were either afraid to play the parochials, or that they did not measure up. I recall that several of the local teams played both AAU and Southwestern Ohio League. However, you probably don't remember most of them because Ralph had the Rockets play up, as did Fast Break with their blue chip recruits (aka Pat Elliot).

 

As noted about previous 8th grade phenoms, it's a shame that the Rocket's best player, Brett Sutton, doesn't play anymore. He was the real deal.

I was speaking more than about the school teams than the AAU teams such as "Ralph's Rockets". They were, by the way a fine team which enjoyed much success over the years, and did in fact dominate most other area AAU teams--Fastbreak excluded, especially after they started getting players from around the state, including the one you mentioned from Jackson County. I do, in fact remember most of the teams they and Pat Ryan's Rockets (class of '07) played, both locally and statewide. Also agree it a shame Brett's not playing, I watched him grow up and really missed the opportunity of seeing him play at the HS level.

 

Not sure why the parochials and publics don't play more, although I recall many of the Catholic schools fielding teams in multiple leagues up to the middle school level, but then the leagues tended to separate.

Campbell County's Freshman, Matt Coffman at 6'2'' 175 lbs., held Ark to 6 pts. while he scored 15 against Ark.

I do know that the "Billygoat" does want to be a BLUEBIRD!!!

Anyone seen much Freshman Basketball this season? Well if you want to see probably the best player in the 9th Region, go watch the Newport Wildcats 6'1'' 185lb. 8th grader, Arkansas Brewer. He is really an outstanding athlete, he plays Guard/Forward, "ARK" as his peers call him, can shoot the three pointer like its a normal jump shot, plus post up and drive and dribble with the best of them. He's averaging 19 pts,9 rebounds,5 assist a game, he is really talented and is super youngman, on and off the Basketball court. Brewer plays AAU for the Louisville Yellow Jackets and is ranked one of the top 25 8th graders in the state of Kentucky. (Good Luck "ARK", and keep the good work up!!!)

 

 

Seems to me this thread was a bit premature. His teams sure have lost a bunch lately, from what I've read. Lots of good hard working kids in the area as well.

I get tired of hearing how good players are coming of of BC middle schools. I've heard that since a very young age. They don't play against the catholic school teams for one, and they don't play much of the inner city schools either. They mostly beat up on other Boone County schools.

 

BC Rebels 8th grade AAU team defeated the Panthers (all kids who will attend Holy Cross next year) 70-31 last night. Rebels are 5-0 now in AAU league play. Rebels hit 10 of 15 3's in the game, with Flannery leading the way with 6. Earls, Popp, Flannery, Thamann, Schultz, and Gabbard all played very well and shot better than 50%. The guards have been able to penetrate well against zones and man-to-man and create havoc on the press. These kids have had success against plenty of Catholic and inner-city teams via AAU ball over the past few years.

 

Ockerman 8th grade team is currently 7-1 and in first place in the Boone/Kenton public school league.

It may all be settled soon. Most of the teams mentioned and others from Central and Eastern Ky are playing in the BCI State Middle School Tournament at Sports of all Sorts in Florence. Get out and watch some great up and coming teams this weekend. We will see who is best.
