Highlands 63 Ryle 14

Featured Replies

Listen to yourself here...If the Cop and cheerleaders were two yards out, Highlands football stadium needs to be shut down. There is a three yard box from the sideline, where nobody can stand. So you are implying that the cop and cheerleaders were in the "box"? No, the fact is that the Ryle player was hit once he was already out of bounds and then both players rolled and tumbled towards the bleachers, knocking out people like bowling pins.

What was your angle?

Stunning ignorance to the facts. 16 Ryle players were not cleared to play by doctors. Every player that was cleared to play competed to the best of their ability and we got whipped. Gee, Dale should have played a couple of kids last year that were not medically cleared to play. That's why Ryle beat the Birds. And, the frosh coach this year should have put Hoge back in the game. Then

Ryle would not have beat the

Birds. Absurd nonsense. It is what it is. Highlands is a very fine team. They won. Congrats to them and on to the playoffs.

There is a huge disparity in the programs in my opinion. Highlands is on a whole different level. I have no problem with the onside kick, however when you do it, you do it at your own peril.

I think everyone should take a chill pill and relax, birds are a great team, if all 16, 8, what ever amount of kids hurt would of have played, still highlands win, a little closeer but they win. Ryle has lot of talant coming up the pipeline, I hope all people involved figures it out, for what's best for the school and program.

When the other team is killing you and they have their 3rd string jv in the game you don't on-sides kick..Highlands could of kept their starters in the game and beat you 90 something to 0..That's BUSH LEAGUE!! When the 1's are in do what ever you want..You don't do it when the other team is taking their foot off of your throat..Classless!!

What if the team doing the onsides kick has their 2nd or 3rd team in also? I don't know who was on the field for Ryle but if their backups were out there also, you should have no issue with the onsides kick.

Fastball, privately I have expressed concern. Friday's exhibition obviously put me over the edge. No one seems to be willing to address the issue of declining depth and numbers. Not sure why that is. No one wants to acknowledge that Coach Warner doesn't have a history of resting players in the last week (see last year's win over HHS). That tells me he bagged it this year because he knew he was in trouble. That's fine. Lots of teams would be in trouble against HHS. Just be consistent.

I was told by someone that Moeller's freshman team this year is down by about 30 players. They still had 60 players but they usually have 90+. Moeller's varsity won the GCL, their JV just blasted Trinity and their freshman team only had one loss (to Cinti. St. X.) so there apparently aren't any program issues. I think the declining numbers is happening in a lot of places so I don't knmow that I would indict a program for it.

Don't know that you can compare Moeller's drop to Ryle's though as we've been hearing about the drop in private schools for a while now. I don't think you can say there are no program issues when a large 6A school drops from 80 or so players to 50 or so in a short period of time.

Wagon makes a good point about everyone should have the best interests of the school and community. To me, this is especially relevant for coaches and parents.

I guess my point is that sometimes these things just run in cycles and aren't necessarily a statement about a program. I wouldn't read too much into the numbers unless it becomes a trend.

Fair enough.

The increase in popularity of soccer may have something to do with this trend.

The 1st thing I noticed when I sat down on Friday night was that Ryle did not have a huge amount of kids on the sidelines. Even with the kids dressed in street clothes, I would have expected a lot more kids on the sidelines for a 6A school.

On the subject of David Cecil Memorial, DON'T CHANGE A THING! My advice to any policeman, cheerleader, spectator, etc. who wants to stand on the sideline, you had better pay attention to the game at all times because you never know what's going to come at you.

Stop it Cricket!!!!!!!!!! You and I both understand what Highlands is all about, its about Tradition. You know that better facilities wouldnt help them win more or beat teams by more points.

I guess new state of the art facilities would stop all of the crying and complaining on here about Highlands facilities and using them as an opportunity to take shots at Highlands instead of taking care of their own business on the field. LOL

I vote no on any upgrades or improvements. Its our 12 th man and it seems to be working.......

I agree with you Sweep. If we had the best facilities, we would then take unnecessary shots from people who would say “we have more advantages than other schools.” What’s the old saying “hater’s goanna hate.” I like our “12th man” too. The hard work our kids, coaches, parents/boosters put in all year long and the tradition that each team lives up too is what produces our success!

He was about 2 yards out of bounds...you did not have a good vantage point.

I was about 2/3 of the way up in the stands at the 50 yard line. Very good view. Here's what I saw: The Ryle runner was running straight down the sideline. At the exact moment that the Highlands player launched himself at the Ryle guy, the Ryle guy took a step out of bounds. No way the HHS guy could stop himself so, yes, the Ryle player was hit just as he stepped out of bounds. No way the Ryle player was anywhere near 2 yards out of bounds when contact was made. He was straddling the sideline - one foot in, one foot out.

Now, I would say technically since contact was made while the player was out of bounds, it could be called a penalty. But it was such a bang-bang play, I would have a hard time throwing a flag on that one.

You're right...but it was still a penalty and it is extremely dangerous on that sideline.

Anyone remember when about 1/3 of the south end zone was concrete track? That was a little dicey.
