Pros and Cons of Having an AD That is Also a Coach

Featured Replies

Not sure if it was a mistake or not, but during the pregame earlier this season, the PA announcer referred to Dale as the "Activities Director." I turned to my wife and asked, "Does that mean he's over the Chess Club?"

How did you understand the PA announcer at Highlands is my question?

Now there is a thread you need to start. Is it the PA announcer or the PA system? My vote for would be announcer.

If you've never been to a Campbell County home game, you would be wishing you coudn't understand the PA announcer by the end of the 1st Q!

Don't be too tough on the guy. He's actually a great guy that has supported Highlands for a long time. I'm told he makes some mistakes (I don't know as I don't listen to the PAs at games). At least he's not one of those obnoxious PAs found at other stadiums that thinks people attend the games to be entertained by them and whom you can't tune out, try as you might.

Totally agree. I am sure Mason County down a bundle to HHS loves the enthusiasm of a first down on the mic. Other programs it is much worse

Yeah no kidding.....I would rather just hear the name and number of the kid. PA announcers are a different breed. I know I couldn't do it....LOL!!!

I think it depends on the person in the position(s). There have been many that have excelled at both and plenty that have failed at both.

One pro about it is, that at least the conversation about firing the Head Coach is a very short and sweet conversation.

So far I'm not hearing a lot of points in favor.

Of the three gentlemen who have been cited by name, are their schools anywhere near as successful in "the other sports" as they are in the sport that they coach?

I think you have to look at them individually though. Has Highlands or Danville ever had another program that matched their football? Those schools go way back as traditional football powers. Perhaps those particular coaches success on the football field is a reason they were ultimately hired as the AD.

I'm not arguing for or against, but I suspect football at Highlands would be the best sport no matter who was AD.

I believe there are individuals who would be capable of separating the two responsibilities and do a good job wearing both hats. But, there's no doubt it presents a potential conflict of interest for them and carries some risk if you misjudge the person you hire.

I think Danville's coach Harp is also the AD over there.

Sam was AD for years, but didn't he retire as a teacher and retain on the football coaching position?

I don't see a huge issue with it. I would think an AD would feel responsible for how all the athletic teams are fairing. A good principal should be able to ensure their AD is being equitable toward all the teams.

That is probably the craziest announcer I have ever heard.

Years ago, it was very common for a head basketball or football coach to be named AD as well. Simply a way to sweeten the financial package to retain a quality coach. Now, however, the responsibilities of an AD are so far-reaching it should be a full-time job. I do not see how anyone can do justice to the AD position who also teaches a full load AND coaches a sport, either as an assistant or head coach. Perhaps it is more doable at a small school that offers fewer sports, but not at schools that offer all, or nearly all, KHSAA-sanctioned sports.

I feel that if you watch enough Charlie Brown shows, you can pick it up. It's sort of look Rosetta Stone for that PA system.

Little to no pros....That's like putting the CEO of a tobacco giant in charge of researching wether cigarettes are addictive or not.:eyeonyou:

I don't like it, unless you have an assistant AD who is pretty competent. I think that it stretches one person way too thin.
