Pros and Cons of Having an AD That is Also a Coach

Featured Replies

Reading the "Where is McCreary Central Headed" thread got me thinking that this issue might merit a thread of its own.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a high-school athletic director that is also a head coach?

I do not see 1 advantage to having the Coach of any Sport double as AD. I don't care how good he or she is they will put their Sport 1st. The AD is suppost to look out for every Sport in the High School. Being unbias in any and all decisions. Don't think it will happen when the AD Coaches a Sport. In all my experiances it does not work for the betterment of all sports.

Somebody should tell Simon Kenton that.

Who didn't know this was coming. However, you might have a point.

I think Danville's coach Harp is also the AD over there.

I've never thought it was a good idea. It's a no-win for the coach/AD.

It's a bad combination.

I think Dale Mueller does a good job handling both responsibilities. I've been a member of the Boosters along side him in the past and he is all about helping the other HHS sports succeed.

Not sure if it was a mistake or not, but during the pregame earlier this season, the PA announcer referred to Dale as the "Activities Director." I turned to my wife and asked, "Does that mean he's over the Chess Club?"

I bet THOSE two a days are brutal !

I think you're correct.

Coach Petett from Monroe County is also an AD. He shares the responsibility with another person so Football does not get everything! Even though its the only real moneymaker in the school sports program for Monroe!!!!

You know Dale only lets them play Speed Chess!

I always thought there were two titles. I thought it was one of the ways to pay a coach more money. They used to pay for everything they did like 60 minute club, etc, not sure any more.

In many cases it is done simply due to lack of funding to be able to adequately pay both a Athletics Director and a Head Coach of the school's most prominent sport (generally football or basketball).
