He didn't win a championship in wrestling but came very close in track.

The Shotwell brothers and Troy Cole were part of the Wrestling State Championship...and may have very well won individual championships as well.

They did, if I remember right, Highlands won by close to 30 or more. Hearing that brings back memories, a friend of mine from high school was cousins with Tim Couch and she was sporting the Leslie County/Couch t-shirts and sweaters all year.

I'd have to go with the obvious answer......'97 Mud Bowl.

1982 championship game against Franklin Simpson. Birds won 6 - 0 on a rain soaked field. I was in the 8th grade...seems like yesterday.

1989 Belfry 3rd round playoffs 21-14 OT. Paved the way for a state title after a 7 year absence.

That was a great game, I thought I was going to freeze to death. I remember it being very physical and Highland's QB was shifty and had a lot of rushing yards. Belfry came up short in OT, but it was a real battle.

 

These two teams met to start the next season in the 1990 Pike Co Bowl, so Belfry actually played HHS in back to back games.

Another '97 game. Opening the season against Moeller and losing 21-20 in a battle of nationally ranked teams. I believe that Moeller was the Division I state runner-up that season. I remember the write up in the papers, and Klonne absolutely raving about how destructive Nathan Lindeman was at LB. That was the most exicting version of the Red Dog. Stemming at the line, Wide 9 techniques at end, and Lindeman bouncing from hole to hole before the snap. You knew that he was blitzing, you just never knew where. His anticipation of the snap count was deadly.

I may be wrong, but wasn't it Duvall or Bowling Ball something or other?

There have been many memorable games, but the St X game would have to be in my Top 5. That was a great game and a big victory that went down to the wire.

Miles did not qualify for the state meet in track, and was number 2 100 meter runner in NKY that year.

Great game! My first game at HHS as a spectator.

I remember that game very well. George Duvall was the runningback for Conner and may be one of the best runningbacks they ever had or will have. I remember that they ended up losing to Cov Cath, but if I remember right, it was a pretty close game. That season was likely one of Conner's best ever that I am aware of.

 

It was a good season and George was a great back.

 

As to the best? They played in two state championship games.

Melvin could play. His older brother Larry was a solid pass rusher as well.

 

One of the Shotwells is now a doctor in Lexington(?).

 

All of the Cole boys were tough as nails.
