Wow.

There's a thread every year about running the score up and the Birds are usually involved. I remember when they beat Holmes a couple years ago and they were throwing the rock in the fourth up 50+, people rationalized that... If they didn't throw in the second half tonight, I don't believe what they did to PC was too, too bad. That was expected, for the most part. Its hard to give up 70 points in a half...I would assume PC did not make an effort towards damage control this evening. The HC has to do everything in their power to move the game along in that situation. I'm interested in the Birds vs Elder matchup.

Highlands kicked off at the beginning of both halves. They took two delay of game penalties at the end of the game when they were at the1 yard line. The second and third teamers were in the second half. They ran the ball much more than they usually do in the second half.

I figured it was going to be bad, but didn't know it would be 72-0 at the half. I knew Pendleton had a small team, but I didn't know they were as small in numbers as they are. They don't have any more players than Dayton.

That says a lot about the kids at PC. Great character to keep coming out and playing every week when you realize the results are probably going to be lopsided.

PC coaching staff keeps them playing hard as well. Some high character kids wearing the red and black. This will all pay off at some point.

FALMOUTH - Donovan McCoy is likely going to be the starting quarterback for Highlands next season, but he is athletic enough to be a starting wide receiver this season. Thursday night he showcased both skill sets.

 

McCoy caught three touchdowns and threw for another on his only pass attempt, all in the first half, as Highlands built a 72-0 halftime lead and went on to beat Pendleton County 79-0 at Veterans Field at Sharp Middle School.

 

Highlands senior quarterback Patrick Towles, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, completed 14 of 19 passes for 295 yards and seven touchdowns before being pulled with just over five minutes left in the first half.

 

McCoy, a junior who entered the game with 14 receptions for 286 yards and two touchdown receptions, finished with four catches for 127 yards and completed his only pass attempt for a 39-yard touchdown to junior Jac Collinsworth with 2:16 left in the first half.

 

"I'm looking forward next year to throwing the touchdown passes, but this year I have to say the catches are better," said McCoy.

 

McCoy has thrown only seven passes on the season, almost 40 less than sophomore Drew Houliston has thrown. Houliston is the junior varsity starter, and for the fifth time in seven games this season he saw significant action.

 

"Drew is playing great, but Donovan is still our two," said Highlands coach Dale Mueller. "We'd like to get him a little more in games, but we get him reps in practice."

 

Despite Highlands (7-0 overall, 3-0 Class 4A, District 7) entering the game knowing it was significantly better than Pendleton County (1-6, 0-3), the Bluebirds were extremely sharp, scoring on all 10 first-half possessions.

 

The Bluebirds, who entered the game averaging 55.5 points per game, scored 37 points in the first quarter alone and stretched their lead to 51-0 a little over two minutes into the second quarter.

 

Highlands had only two second-half offensive possessions, scoring on the first and allowing the clock to run out after driving to the Pendleton County 1.

 

Highlands outgained Pendleton County, 493-65 overall.

 

It was conceivable at halftime that Highlands might reach 100 points despite the running clock, but Mueller said he wouldn't let that happen.

 

"We are committed to not scoring 100," Mueller said. "... I don't care if we start kneeling it in the third quarter, but we're not going to score 100."

I now rank the KHSAA right up there with the NCAA. Shouldn't the results of the state playoffs last year have been a clue? What ya do about it if you’re the commissioner of the KHSAA.
