The Dixie game proved Beechwood is #1 and Mayfield will have to play it's best to beat them (if Mayfield makes it).

BW has a legit chance to win the title.

The Dixie game though doesn't tell us anything about how they will fare against Mayfield.

Hey Ram

In 09 if you came on here the over whelming majority said Beechwood was the team to beat. BW was the defending 2 time champs and what they had coming back. Mayfield 38 Beechwood 0. Last year more of the same, if you came on here the vast majority of BGPers said when Mayfield came to Beechwood that the long drive and home field advantage Beechwood would take this game. Mayfield 38 Beechwood 14. Has Beechwood with what they have returning make up this difference?

I understand what you're saying and I remember all the comments. But, In all reality, I expected Mayfield to win last year, I'm sure you can find where I said it and some thought me wrong. I expected Mayfield to win due to what they had. This year, I think Beechwood is the team to beat. I know that is a difficult road given the record between the two teams. And, who knows, Mayfield may win, but I still think Beechwood should be the favorite this year.

And I would add to Ram's post above, that in 2009 Beechwood returned 8 seniors. That is it. They did not return much from those two championship teams. They had the smallest line that I can ever recall at the school. I think that year many thought BW might have a chance because they questioned Mayfield's schedule but BW struggled all year against teams with size and that Mayfield game was basically a repeat of what happened that year when the Tigers faced bigger, talented teams. For example, Dixie beat that Beechwood team 47-7. Cov Cath beat that team 43-14. The 38-0 beating they took at Mayfield was definitely worse than BW fans expected but it wasn't something BW fans had not seen that year.

As to who is #1, I agree with Govnah. Mayfield is #1 till they do something that says they aren't number one. They have earned that with their title last year and going undefeated this year.

Mayfield is undefeated and won the state championship last year. They are and should remain #1. There is no question.
I agree 100! As many others stated before the season I thought Mayfield would be the team to beat, it's not like their cupboards are bare. And they still have the best propaganda duo in the state! :)
I think both Mayfield and Beechwood could care less about being number one. If they both take care of business then we shall see who is number one!

Agreed.

Snake, you crack me up! The game that has impressed me the most this year is what Beechwood did against CC, then CC turns around and gives Highlands a very good game. I think that game tells the story on just how good Beechwood really is. Mayfield is good, not as good as last year, but they have not played a team of CC's calliber. Having said that, IF, all goes as expected, Beecwood still has to come to mayfield and beat them on their home field, not an easy task!
Last year has nothing to with this years rankings.
Not true. It is a factor. It may not be the biggest piece of the puzzle, but it is relevant.

Given the recent history between the two schools, what they both return and the 2011 results so far, I think Mayfield is the team to beat.

A very good case can be made for both schools, and depending on the week either one of them may look like the favorite that week.

One thing for sure, I disagree with Ram in that is it cut and dried. It is anything but cut and dried.

Last year has nothing to with this years rankings.

Sure it does. It tells you about the program that you are talking about. If Dayton was undefeated this year, would they be considered #1. I think not!

I think Bwood is getting a little too much credit for its schedule and Mayfield not enough. In reality, Dixie and Skenton are games Bwood should have won because those 2 teams aren't very good. CCath is the one really good team they have played and they lost, but, did make it respectable. Tilghman would beat anyone BWood has played, without question, except Cov Cath and that would be a good game. I would even say Graves Co would beat SK and Dixie. You may look at there record and laugh, but, they've played a tough schedule and are much better than the record indicates. Murray is also as good and better than Holmes, who gave Bwood a good game. This isn't saying I think Mayfield has played a tougher schedule, just that BWood is getting too much credit for playing a tough schedule, when, in reality, a few of the teams they have beaten aren't as good as they're getting made out to be and some of the teams Mayfields played are better than they get credit for. That's all.

I would agree with the bold above. That was the argument some wanted to make two years ago and we saw how that worked out.

On Beechwood's schedule, don't discount Holy Cross as a good team. I know the Tigers put a whipping on them but I think Holy Cross is a very good team and in the top ten in the state in 2A, maybe top 5. I also would not discount Dixie too much. I still wouldn't be shocked if Dixie wins 6A in N. Ky. and that is a solid 6A district. Dixie has already beaten Boone Co. so the big game for the title in that district will be Dixie versus Ryle and Dixie could pull it off if they get healthy.

But you are absolutely right. I pay little to no attention to the schedule debate because Mayfield has more than proven that their schedule is plenty tough enough.

I am amazed by this post! I think you must have some sort of mind reading device. Prior to rearding this posts I was just visiting with the Snake and echoed your above post nearly word for word. I agree with what you said 110%. Dixie and Skenton are just decent 6A teams, nothing over the top much like some of the 6A teams in our neck of the woods. We will learn little if anything more about Mayfield until later in the playoffs but we will get to learn a little more about Bw when they play NCC. I will add that I am pleased with the development of our offensive line and the qb play of Jake Guhy. Guhy has proven he can throw the deep ball, somthing I didn't think he could do at the begining of the season. I feared Bw would fill up the box to stuff the run but Guhy's development along with the family trade mark of being masterful at reading defenses will not allow Bw this option and that is huge in my opinion. I am also pleased with the defense, it has been even better than advertised and it was advertised as being much better than last years. I fill like if Bw is to win they will have to do it through the air, our run defense is just nasty. All of this of cousre is assuming both win out.

The simple fact is: in 2011, Beechwood is the team to beat in 1A. Mayfield has a great team and may very well beat Beechwood, but given what Beechwood returned and what they have accomplished this season, they are number 1 and Mayfield should be number 2.

And, if both school's fans would quit the sandbagging and bragging on the other team, I think they would both agree with that.

Ram you might turn out to be right but I would argue that you are giving more credit to who they beat than I would. The 1 thing that stands out to me is the CC game, that was a hell of a showing by Bw much like their showing against NCC last year. Aside from that I am not sold of Dixie or Skenton as being all that. I would also point out that you made similar claims the last 2 years though last year you sort of went back and forth and we all know how that turned out. I do believe there is no question that these are the best 2 teams in the class and I think the last 2 years and this year that it is a shame they are on the same side of the bracket becasue they should have the best 2 playing for the title on neutral fields for the title.

Honestly, from what I have seen of Dixie, Bwood should have won that game. DH may be one of the worst coached teams I've seen and outside of Pike, they don't have much. Bwood is a very good ball club and very well may be #1, but, beating Dixie sure isn't the reason.

Completely agree! :ylsuper:
