Did he play much last year?

Remember the name MICHAEL SMITH (SR.) from Highlands. Big lefty will make big noise this year. Also, Patrick Allen (JR?) has been playing outstanding "Fall Ball"...should be a mainstay on the mound.

He rushed for 1400+ yards playing a 4A schedule, right? Trust me. He would have gotten lots of carries at any school he was at.

I agree that he would have got plenty of carries at any school he went to but h would not have got 1400 yards SHARING DUTIES with a Scot Gray or a Drew Ellis ect. My point is that he is in the right program at the right time.

 

Nothing wrong with having luck and tallent.

It doesnt hurt to have a father who is a base coach for the Florence Freedom... I am sure he pulled some strings to get the scouts up to watch....and he is a good player from what I hear. I heard he has a cannon for an arm and good bat speed. His Dad was a heckuva player so I am sure it is in the genes. Its the quickest route to the majors....look at guys like Jason LaRue....

I also find it hard to believe his dad was able to "get" him a scholarship. I'm going to guess he has some potential.

He does have the size and the heart to play baseball in college. Just to know if he is good enough for D-1. Now i dont know how competitive U of Tampa is but i would say being in Flordia playing from Feb. to late June they would be competitive than any schools up here. So i hope he is successful and I would say hes good plus potential rather than just potential.

Well that IS one of the reasons why he left to go to Holy Cross was because him and his family believed he would get better coaching there. And yes I did say the freshman coach was horrible, so thats why I said he would have been better off staying here at Ludlow because he WOULD have been starting here. I seen the team play last year plenty of times and I have seen Alex play plenty of times. The fact is he would have fit in greatly for what last years team was lacking. He would have been the fastest one of the team, which they had no speed. He would have had one of the top 3 arms on the team, and he could have played any position on that team. Specifically third base or outfield where Ludlow seemed to have to rotate players at alot last year because they couldn't settle on one starter at those positions. So yeah it is pretty easy of me to assume he would have or atleast should have been starting.

 

As for the coaching I really didn't set out to say anything else about it, I was just saying one of the reasons why he left. There were other reasons to like him wanting to keep playing with his teammates from knothole.

 

So I really dont want to get into the coaching matter much that you all have brought up because I think I said enough about it before already...The one thing I will say is that I know I have been critical of the coaching and that is just because I love Ludlow and I am tired of seeing talented get wasted when the teams could be alot better instead of being just mediocre. Small schools like us at Ludlow always have cycles of talented players that come through, and I dont feel like we take of advantage of it when we do. I believe we have started to settle for being the feel good story for a week when we do pull off a upset of a big school, but why should we settle for that when we have talent there to do so much more. If we take advantage of having the talent at are school when we have it, then it might start getting kids to want to go to Ludlow to play sports instead of transfering.

 

So I dont believe I am wrong at all with this because we have had alot of talented players here at Ludlow the last 4 or 5 years and I dont believe we have taken advantage of it. So yes I do get a little angry about this sometimes because I believe we have settled for just being mediocre sometimes and being that feel good story for a week when we could have and should have been so much more.

 

Just to settle this between you two. Alex is a great talent. But I would be shocked if he got much PT on varsity. He is very raw still. Has a very strong arm, and can play alot of postions. He came to HC mostly because every kid he grew up with and played baseball and basketball with attends HC. I coached Alex in basketball growing up and was his big buddy at St.Augustine when he was in 1st grade. I'm not putting him down, but right now at HC I would be shocked if he did anything more than start JV.

Yeah I understand what your saying because I know most of all of that, cause I been with Alex the whole time he has been growing up for the most part. My thing is that we were discussing and the point I was trying to make is that if he were still at Ludlow that he could and would have been starting last year as a freshman on the varsity team, because Ludlow did have a couple holes on that team that they kept having to rotate players at like at third base and a spot in the outfield. I know they finally settled on Jarett Rouse at third and he was a freshman just like Alex, and Jarett did a great job. So there is no reason to think if they were already using one good freshman that they wouldn't have started Alex to because he would have been one of the better players on the team.

 

So thats why I think if Alex was at Ludlow last year then there would have been a great chance he would have been starting on the Varsity team because they were using alot of young players anyways and he would have been one of the best young players on the team.

Correct me if i am wrong but i heard Detkas from Highlands is going to the University of Tampa to play ball. So is he that good, I know nothing about Tampa but im sure they are D-1. So is Detkas considered the top player. IMO i do not think so but is he?

Pendleton County could be a cinderella team out of the tenth this year but they need to get the pitching part down and they could be a top contender for the tenth region title. Also, watch out for a couple returning players from last year such as Brad Wright and Austin Monroe. They know what they are doing and they will be stand out players this year.

If you're talking about best athletes all around......two that would definitely have to be included if not at the top of the list is Brett Sutton and Todd Jacobs. You won't like hearing this, but the academic work load at Cov. Cath. does not enable a lot of these boys to play multiple sports. Plus, that is why we our kids go to high school right? For the education? Oh yeah.....I know some of you think it's all about sports. I saw Corey Farris play this summer....he would not be playing varsity at CCH as a freshman or a sophmore. Get real......

 

Relax, DP, on the academics talk. The players I know choose not to play for many reasons. They're all good students and could handle the workload. B Sutton did not play b-ball and it had zip to do with academics. TJ chose not to play football because he wants to concentrate on b-ball.

 

Corey Farris would have been in the backfield rotation as a SOPH and would have most likely played catcher as a FROSH at CCH.

Don't get me wrong, Corey Farris is an extremely good ball player but if you put it this way, he only played for 5 games during his 8th grade year at Boone. That's the year after Boone went to sectionals. They weren't very good because of many losses they incurred like Killion and Brodsky, therefore giving Corey a chance to play. I don't think if he would've gone to CCH his freshmen year that he would've played because of the other players at the catcher position that they had. What I'm trying to say is that we know how good Farris is because of the opportunity given to him by Boone. He wouldn't have necessarily gotten that chance elsewhere.

I disagree DH baseball, Corey would have definitely gotten that chance elsewhere just like he did at Boone. Same goes for Cov Cath. Maybe not a 6th man in basketall but in the rotation, and football he didn't even start at boone but he would have been a very crucial part of the JV team just like at boone either as a RB or QB. But were talking about baseball and as a freshman there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been there starting catcher. By no means am I downing any of there Catchers but IMO Corey last year was better than who they had back there. But no problem were both entitled to our own opinions.

 

And just a correction Corey did see time in more than 5 games his 8th grade year.
