The BG Chiefs 18U completed an undefeated sweep of it's 5 games, posting a 5-0 record over the weekend in winning a co-championship in the Pastime Tournament at West Chester and the University of Cincinnati. The Chiefs outscored their 5 opponents at total of 39 to 7 in gaining the wins. Victories were notched against the Cincinnati Bulldogs, Columbus Sharks, Advantage Sports Aces, Team Hamilton, and Cincinnati Mavericks. It was a great weekend with solid play from the entire squad contributing to the wins. The Chiefs are at Dixie Heights for a 6:30 PM start on Tuesday. The 2010 edition of the Bluegrass Chiefs 18U select team has just completed another successful summer campaign. The Chiefs closed the season by winning 18 of their last 22 to finish the summer with a record of 28 wins and 21 losses. Tryouts for next summer's Chiefs will be on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Dixie Heights HS, from 9 AM until 12:30 AM. Registration begins at 8:30 AM. No player can have turned 19 before May 1, 2011, to be eligible.

Is the 9th Region Tourney slated to return to Freedom Field, or are the district winners hosting 1st round games? And, if that be the case, where is the Final 4 and Finals to be held? Is there a host school? I know the schools have not been happy with the financial arrangements the Freedom demanded, but there has not been a better day in NKY HS baseball the last few years than when all the games, and especially the first 4, were all held back to back on Memorial Day.

He is greatly missed by his summer teammates and the coaches on the Bluegrass Chiefs. What a summer he had on the field. All-star from the first day. The ball hit his mouth on a foul tip on a bunt attempt unselfeshly trying to move 2 runners to 2nd and 3rd. We are here in Pittsburgh at the Freeport International Tournament and wish he was here with us. All the coaches and players are wearing his "1" on their caps and/or helmets to honor the player and tremendous young man he is. Get well quick.

Number 18 is sophomore, Josh Bertke, and he ended up on the all-tournament team, deservedly. Pitched, played 2nd, and 3rd, in the tournament.

Trevor Dunaway's 2 RBI single to center keyed Boone's 5 run 6th. Tyler Deno got the win with 2 innings in relief of starter Logan Faehr, who pitched 5 shutout innings for the Rebs. Faehr pitched out of a bases loaded no out jam in the 5th allowing no runners to score. Boone effectively played small ball to force the action in the 6th inning rally.

I knew bulldog would chime in on this one. If you can play you do not have to be a mutant in height or weight to excel at this great game. There are spots to be had at the college level for a lot of kids if they stay with it through HS and the select seasons. I see it every year.

TOG, did you quit going to the games this summer, or just stopped reporting all the details when the results were not favorable. The paper in the article about the 16U team being added said the Colonels went 30-20 this summer. Reliable sources have reported to me and others that the record was actually 20-30. Can you put us straight? The scores being reported on their web page stopped within the first couple of weeks of the summer. What gives? Just looking for the facts.

Im not disagreeing baseball is life....but I did see Houlehan the other day and he told me that he received the pitcher of the year award...Maybe it was by a different organization...like the district or something. But I can confirm from Nick himself that he did win some kind of pitcher of the year award.

It is Maronde's little brother (class of 2010) as I understand, not the draft pick. By the way, IMO there is nothing wrong, or to be considered strange or criticized, about bunting, moving runners, and playing to win, even is summer ball. Go to a college game or two and you will understand the value college coaches place on such skills as the sacrifice bunt, hitting behind runners, and generally playing the game the right way. As is often said by players and coaches at the next level, "do your job."

That's low for him, hardly a taxing workout.

Look at StatMan's post number 2 above. The only pitcher's not eligible tomorrow, including Nichols, Krohman, and Houlehan are, I believe Niehaus and Connor (NewCath). I am not sure if Connor pitched into the 6th or not, so he may be OK too. Since all the first round games got played on Monday the gentlemen's agreement made by the coaches re resting pitchers for everyone as if they pitched the day of the last first round game played is off.

Thanks for the clarification on Elliot's play in center. I was just assuming he hit a wet spot and that's what caused him to slip. Quite honestly I don't think there is a player up here that would have gotten to that ball. It was a nice little shot.

Bred man... Boone also would be able to throw Houlehan on Friday if they make it to that point. I guess he can't pitch tomorrow. I don't know all the rules. But he would definitely be able to pitch friday if Boone wins....Either way after tomorrow the championship game is going to have 2 ace pitchers on the mound. I think that is how it should be and will make for a great Friday night.

Cooperstown once again like in another thread...I have to agree with you...I think on the error by Elliot that the 1 run would have scored. If I can remember correctly that was when Lokesak got in the pickle right before the error. If Beechwood gets Daniel out then that doesn't happen. Instead the failed pickle allowed the 1 run and then the error allowed Corey to score from first. Lokesak is a good base runner though with good speed, and while Elliot has a cannon, I think he would have scored on the play.... Next thing I agree with is on the catch that Boone got 2 runs from. That had extra bases written all over it. I think it was Faehr who was hitting. He absolutely ripped that ball deep to center and Elliot made an outstanding catch on a dead sprint. It wasn't him tripping over his own feet. If you saw him after he ran in once the inning was over he had mud all over is back. Maybe he hit a wet spot on the grass or warning track that caused him to slip. Good heads up base running by the Rebels and unfortunate for the Tigers. Also, Boone did make some mistakes. Had a few costly errors and the free passes definitely played apart in some of the runs Beechwood scored. IMO I don't think this game should have ever went to the bottom of 7. In the top of the 6th Nick retired the first 2 batters of the inning. Then walked a guy, hit a batter, and Faehr made a low throw that wasn't picked at first for an error. Bases loaded and then the base hit tied the game at 8. If Houelhan closes the inning the 7th inning dramatics might not have happened. But with the way this game was going, who knows lol! All in all though it was a classic!!! Back and forth battle! I enjoyed every second of it. While there was some errors and free passes that proved costly. These kids are high school baseball players on a huge stage. It's apart of the game. Both teams battled and fought to the end. Got to tip your hat to the Tigers and Rebels for overcoming adversity at numerous times in the game.....Proud to be a Rebel right now and hoping my boys can keep the run going.

If Chris Miller does not hit the bomb into the RF bullpen, then nothing that happened later would even have mattered.

Definitely agree Cooperstown with what you have to say about Coach Wilhoite. He has done a great job with the Rebels this year. Lost Mark Reed early in the season, and they haven't missed a beat. Boone can really hit and with Reed in there it would be even better, but the boys have overcome it, with a final four appereance and chance to be in the regional final tomorrow. Got to tip your hat to Coach on leading them to this point. Also, Coach Sanders at Bellevue did a great job with a very very young team. He has completely turned around that program, and I think this year was just another step in the process. As long as Coach Sanders is down there they will continue to be competitive, and start to be a contender in the near future. This year he did an outstanding job. Other coaches who are up there is Krumps at Cov Cath. They are the number 1 team at this point, and have had a good season. So he gets some mention. Last is Coach Shulkens at New Cath. Led them to an All A Regional Championship and they are in the final four. I think all four are good picks. But IMO it goes to Wilhoite or Sanders.

Last year one admission got you in for all the games.

The Rebels won the 33rd District Crown with a 5 inning 12-2 win over St. Henry. Corey Farris went long for Boone, Nick Houlehan improved his record to 8-2, and the rest of the team more than did their share. All District Tourney honors went to Daniel Lokesak, Todd Krohman, and the MVP went to Corey Farris.

Who remembers Ludlow beating CovCath in the District a few years ago? Always expect the unexpected in baseball. As Coach Sanders often says, "let a lesser team stay with you and they will find a way to beat you."
