Now that I disagree on. Those cornfields are exactly why it is easier for Mayfield to keep it going. Anyone in that entire area that wants to play top level football is going to want to go to Mayfield. Beechwood doesn't even get all the best players in Ft. Mitchell. They pick up some out of district students to offset that. But there are quality players that live in Ft. Mitchell that go to other schools. Is there one high quality football player in Graves County that doesn't play for Mayfield?

Graves has several players that Mayfield would like to have. The Wilson kid is a 6'5" 325lb lineman and is just a junior. Graves has some quality kids that can play and if they were in 1A they would be a tough out.

I don't know how the Bw players or coaches or fans feel or think but I do know that sometimes a team does get into the head of another. A good example down here is Mayfield vs Murray, the Cards second oldest rival until Murray decided enough is enough and droped us. They had managed 1 win in 98 dating back to the early 70's. They decided that they needed a break and now they are going to play us again this year for the first time in 7-8 years. They openly admitted we had gotten a mental edge on their kids and I think they were right. A number of those years they lost they were susposed to win. Some time off and a new coach and they feel that they are no longer having to battle the mental aspect of the game with us. Bw likely enjoys a mental edge of alot of class A, so do we but the question to me is do the traditional powers get some sort of mental block? I have no idea, maybe it is in the back of their mind maybe not. If you listen to the replay of the NKY sports radio broadcast of this years May-Bw game the announcer late in the game (after is becomes obvious May will win) states that this is uncharted water for the Bw program, that this is the first time they have had a 1A team that expected to be champs every year, a role he said he felt Bw had held over all of 1A until Mayfield the last couple of years. He was basically asking or wondering how Bw was handling a reversal in roles from where they had always been the team that everyone else looked up to as the gold standard and Mayfield came in and didn't seem to see Bw in that light and I took him to wonder how this would impact Bw in future meetings. I think it is a real issue that can get inside the heads of players and maybe even coaches but I think it is less likely to with teams like May and Bw that are use to taking a back seat to no one. Mayfield has certainly never thought of Bw as being a better team or program(I suspect Bw feels the same way about us), we always like to point out that had we and Danville been in class A ( as we could have been when we played up in class AA) over the years that we feel some of the Bw titles would have been in in Mayfield or Danville.

I think it is much easier for Bw to keep it going, I've never seen a single player who had a mom and day that were corn stalks. The difference in population makes it possible for say a Highlands or Cov Cath to get the best and the left over are still alot more than we have. The closing of a couple large employers here a few years ago led to several of out best players families moving and it directly impacted the Cardinal football program for several years and I might add greatly impacted the success of some TN football literally. The same would not have the same impact on the Bw program. Right now we are slowly comming back to being the Mayfield that everyone recalls before our tough drought years but it is hard in such a small rural place We feel that we work harder than anyone and have surrounded ourselves with what we feel are class 1A's best coaches and they mold less into more and it shows but I still feel that we are at a distinct disadvantage to say Bw due to the limited numbers of a small rural area.

Kenton County has 158,183 people as of 2009 and 8 HS football programs we have 2 so that would translate into roughly 19,800/HS for Kenton and 17,500/HS for Graves. Numbers don't favor us. If one goes furhter and looks at all 7 KY counties in the Greater Cincy MSA we find 420,000 or roughly 20% of the Cincy MSA population. If you cant find left overs from that many then I don't know what to tell you. Us on the other hand struggle with a much smaller population and a much larger school that can offer more than we can

Or how about over 1 million people within 30 minutes in Ohio ... but not one of those people go to Beechwood. See, you can throw around metro population numbers but it doesn't matter. Also, not that it matters, but there are 9 football playing high schools in Kenton County and 4 more that don't have football. And don't forget two of those Kenton County football schools are private schools that can pull kids right out of Ft. Mitchell.

Mayfield has recently had some kids transfer in from the county as freshmen, but that is a fairly new phenomenon.

 

Since Graves County opened in 1985 as a consolidation of six non-football schools, there hasn't been a great number of county kids that have suited up for Mayfield. There have been only a handful and only a couple that I can think of that made a significant impact.

Maybe, but not too many people in the county see it that way. Graves County's enrollment is about three times that of Mayfield, and I would say the bigger school usually has about twice as many players in the program, or at least a significant number more.

 

Graves has been competitive in its own right, although rarely on a level where it figures to make some noise on the state level.

Mayfield had 4 or 5 kids transfer in from Graves Co last year, but, they were 8th and 9th graders and had little to no impact on last years team. They will make a difference in the next couple of years, however. Prior to these few kids, I can't remember any Graves kids transferring in. I can remember a few transferring from Mayfield to Graves, though. I also can't remember any kids from outside the county coming in to play for Mayfield. If there were, they were pretty much a non factor. I have no idea about Beechwood, but, I would bet they get more out of county students that play football than Mayfield does. It's almost unheard of to have a school with 300-400 students dress 75-85 kids, even with freshmen. I do know there have been some yrs Beechwood dressed that many in the 90s.
