I have to ask since you are posting these pics in such a boastfull manor, do you really think that this high offensive line play and poor faking after the handoff would compete with any of the five best teams in the state last season, of which Mayfield was certainly not. They were the best A high school last year. Leave it at that and understand there are many teams in this state last season that would have beat them soundly.

Beechwood fan taking up for Mayfield?! Is that possible? Yes, cause here I go. I disagree with you LW. Mayfield was very good last year. I am not saying they beat Trinity or Highlands. But Mayfield was one of the best teams in the state last year regardless of class. Beechwood beat 2A champ Newport Central Catholic and Mayfield was better than NCC IMO. So there is one state champ that Mayfield could not only play with but likely would beat.

Voice I have to agree with you also, this Mayfield team was a very good team and would give anyone a run for their money. I saw them twice live and on film 3 different games and they were very quick,fast and dominating. Well coached and lots of talent on that team. JD

TP...I heard from one of your rivals to check to see how many MF players over the past 5yrs have played at the next level. He gave me a number, but since it's your rival I took it with a grain of salt. I'd believe it if it came from you. Out of curiosity, how many?

Not many.. Mayfield will have a few go to a UT Martin or Murray St or some of the NAIA teams, maybe a Western Ky but, that's about it.. I would say and I don't know this for sure, but, somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 kids have probably played at the next level in the past 5 yrs and that would include your NAIA kids, too.. I believe Micah Jones was the last one that went to a BCS school and that was somewhere in the 03-04 range.. Truth is, they usually produce talented HS players, just not of the D1 caliber, except on a few rare occassions(Jonathan Jackson being one of those)..

The best offense in school history? That's saying quite a bit.

 

The numbers back up that statement...Most passing yards, most points scored, most passing TDs, largest margin of victory, etc.. Last years team holds all those records, not to mention they were pretty much 50-50 in passing vs rushing yards, so, they were very diverse which made them extremely hard to prepare for..

 

Alot of past Mayfield teams won alot of games with there defense and had alot of 14-7 type wins, plus, under Jack Morris's regime when they were winning alot of those titles, they were primarily a wishbone team, 4 yrds and a cloud of dust, nothing even remotely close to the spread, air it out offense of the past 2 yrs..

The pic you are referring too is when they were taking a knee at the end of the game, so, at least have a clue what you're talking about. Secondly, showing these pics and saying you were one of the best 5 teams in the state are 2 different things and I'm still looking for someone who said they were. Thirdly, besides Trinity, St X and Highlands, I don't think too many teams would have beaten them soundly. I'm sure there are 10 to 15 5a and 10-15 6a teams who could beat Mayfield and another 10-15 teams in some of the lower classes that could, as well, however, I also believe that Mayfield could have beaten those other teams just as many times or more, in most cases.

 

By the way, that's why they have classifications. Should a school with under 400 kids be able to beat teams with 3-4 or 5 times as many students. No, but, there are those rare occassions whereas a smaller class school can go toe to toe with the majority of the big boys and last years team was one of those occassions.. I think LCAs team from the year before was also one of those teams and I'm sure NCC and Beechwood feel like they've had some past teams who could do the same. This isn't a new phenomenon.

Larry that is how we teach that particular play and formation. We only run that particular formation and play very late in the game. That particular play does not require any faking. I'm guessing you don't know a whole lot about football or just don't recognize what you see. We call it our victory formation and we have our qb take a knee out of respect for out opponet rather than tacking on a meaningless td after a game has been decided. In this case we did so against the 1A team with which we have the most respect of all for Beechwood and that is why I posted it for Voice who I hope took it as a show of respect for his great program who will be the favorite to win the title this year. Maybe your team, whoever that is, will do well this year and it will make you less disgruntled toward Mayfield.

Add Boyle County and Ryle to the mix of having been able to beat them soundly. I can distinctly remember a thread this year asking if Mayfield was one of the best teams in the state overall. The answer to that is no. I watch Mayfield play in the state finals. They clearly out athleted their opponent. They ran quite a few screens and a vertical passing game. They are not good enough up front to compete with the big schools. When I say soundly, I am talking about four or more touchdowns. However, don't get me wrong, they are a very good football team. They would, and likely did as I don't know all the opponents they played last year, have beaten many down 5A and 6A schools. I just know they should not have been in the top five in the state last year, and I think it would have been tough for them to be assured of the top ten. There is such a huge difference between the best A ball and the best in the larger classes. And BTW, looking at that pic again, I apologize, it is the victory formation.

I didn't know they were ever ranked in the Top 5 to start with.. I agree about Ryle, don't agree about Boyle. I also saw them play the last 2 yrs and felt Mayfield would have played pretty even with them. They didn't, by any means, have a dominate line that would have blown Mayfields away. Matter of fact, 2 yrs ago, Lone Oaks line dominated Boyles for the majority of the game and I'm very familiar with Lone Oaks team and last years Mayfield team was pretty even with Lone Oaks 09 team, maybe even slightly better, overall. Just my opinion..

My team is Ryle, and they will do well this year. I have already apologized for not seeing it was the victory formation, and if you read my follow up post, I am not disgruntled towards Mayfield. I don't think they were one of the ten best teams in the state last year.
