Guhy was arguably the best QB Beechwood faced last year - and Beechwood saw Pike and Towles. Obviously Pike and Towles are on a different level athletically. But Guhy was IMO the best QB Beechwood saw at reading a defense and finding the open receiver. He was great at that. Honestly, without Guhy, I think Beechwood had a good chance of beating Mayfield. I thought he made that big a difference in the game.

 

Actually Guhy was huge but we have been better up front the last couple of years and even without Guhy I think Bw would have had a hard time

My team is Ryle, and they will do well this year. I have already apologized for not seeing it was the victory formation, and if you read my follow up post, I am not disgruntled towards Mayfield. I don't think they were one of the ten best teams in the state last year.

I agree with that. Two years ago, Beechwood's biggest weakness was in the lines and that is why we saw what we saw in that game. Last year, the line play was much more even. Mayfield really did not run the ball effectively till the end of the game. I think Mayfield had the edge at the line of scrimmage last year and eventually wore Beechwood down but not nearly as much as two years ago when Beechwood was very undersized in the line. But I think without Guhy keeping the ball moving, keeping the offense on the field, Mayfield doesn't wear Beechwood down like they did. Guhy was the big difference in the game and made everything else fall into place for the Cardinals.

Truth be told, that is fantasy. I did watch the cards play last year and there was no place on the field where the cards had Ryle outmatched. Mayfield's biggest advantage against most of their opponents, speed, did not exist against Ryle. Let alone the complete difference in physicality up front. There was one team in the state better than Ryle last year, and only a couple as good, and none of those schools were named Mayfield. Please play some competition to back up such a statement.

Why are you here, Larry? Ryle is a 6A school. I looked them up and they were a very very good team . How good? I really dont know but for you to get on here and bash a 1A school , come on. Larry, Mayfield was very good last year, way better than most and most people in the know think they were a top ten team. I go by what the Mayfield coach's say and by what I hear from around the state. Maybe we were maybe we weren't. You are just one voice and really I dont understand why you care.

Any chance the westsider might drive south to catch the scrimmage against Milan. I would really like to hear his opinion on this year's team.

I plan on attending. That West guy isnt likely to be at a Mayfield scrimmage, I don't think he is a Cardinal. Maybe a Tilghman guy but I'm pretty sure he isn't from Mayfield so I doubt he would be at our game

Went to Milan tonight and was just hopeful we could keep it close given Milan's preseason ranking. The Cards looked like they were in late season form winning the varsity portion 48 to 10. I think all worries about the offense were put to rest. Jake Guhy looked like his brother from a year ago.

I agree TP. Jake looks just like Luke out there, just an inch or 2 shorter. The kids gonna be a good one. Saw alot of new faces out there with alot of athleticism and ability. They're gonna be deep at the skill positions. The lines on both sides have a ways to go to match last years and I doubt they'll get to the point that they're as good. Hard to replace a sr dominated line with 2-3 yrs as starters, but, I did see some potential and I think they'll be adequate enough to get the job done, even if not as good as last years unit. They just need some games under there belts and hope to avoid injuries because the depth there isn't that great, and they aren't real big, but, they'll end with 4-5 solid kids there. I was impressed with Wynstra kicking and punting the ball. Should be in good shape there again this year. It's a big weapon to have a kid capable of hitting a 35-40 yard FG and he seems to have that type leg.
