They should be able to defend their crown. They have some good talent coming back. Surprised Toothpick has not jumped on her yet.

It's going to be very difficult to top, or even equal, last year's performance on the field....but don't think this team won't give it their best shot. Luke Guhy will be hard to replace at the QB slot, but from what I hear, there is a young man who has moved here from Georgia that is doing a nice job at that position. This is Johnathan Jackson's team...and he is acting like it. The players have been working on their own...some at JJack's prompting...and their goal is to repeat as state champions. That remains to be seen, but I like their attitude.

I do know that the first game is in Bowling Green against Greenwood. Then the next week we travel to Evansville, IN. Let's hope the price of gas takes a tumble because we are going to need it.

They had a very dominate team last year. Good Luck to you guys this year!

For Mayfield to get back to Bg

1st their line has to step up, they are young but there is some talent

2nd who ever takes over at QB will have to be able to get the ball in the hands of its playmakers and not make dumb mistakes.

These are the two main things.

The good news is that they will be about as strong on defense as they were in 10.

The other thing is they will be faster than they were last year. Faster but maybe not better.

Has Beechwood made up ground on Mayfield from the last two seasons?

It's way to soon for me to say but I know that we will be right the hunt and the semi final game will be in the west this season.

As far as Ram's first question, improving on last year's 15-0 season that saw only 1 close game all season, 11 running clocks and the state title with a running clock in the 3rd quarter will be near impossible.

As compared to last year we will be less experienced, more youthful but very talented and very quick. Most feel we will be quicker than last year and I would agree with that.

Snake is dead on! The Cards will be very talented and deep at all the skill positions, will have another excellent kicker and punter and the defense (anchored by highly touted MLB Jonathan Jackson) is expected to be on par with last year. The qb and line are question marks. The line has a couple solid returners who saw alot of play and there are a couple of young kids that are expected to be beast but the question is are they ready for Friday night lights. They should get much better by playoff time. The biggest question mark will be at QB, Luke Guhy will be a hard act to follow. His younger brother in my opinion, is ahead of where Luke was at the same period and usually looked solid in JV games and he has some of the same qualities that made his brother so effective including the brain both on and off the field. Luke changed plays at the line more often than not to put the Cards offense in the best match up situations and Jake should also be good at that. The other option for the Cards at qb is a transfer from Georgia who has impressed all with his athletic skill and might be better used elsewhere but many feel that he will be our qb and due to not knowing more I have nothing else that I can add. We will have Jonathan Jackson in the back field who should be the best power runner in 1A if not the state. I expect some early growing pains and alot of late season success. There should only be a couple of 1A teams across the state that would be capable of playing with or beating this young group, espicaly if the qb play is decent. Being all the way in the west we will benefit from playing all our playoff games at home til we lose or go to BG assuming we win our district which we should do.

Mayfield is the best team in A this year again. No one will be able to touch them. They will go undefeated and win A once again this year and probably for many more years in the future. Their program is just too strong and they have the best coaches in the state. No one in A has a chance against them.

As I read this description, it reminds of 2008. That year Beechwood had a very good team heading into the season and the main contender for the title was Lexington Christian. That year LCA had a great power running back in Hayden, a sophomore QB who was very smart, good at reading defenses and running LCA's spread offense. And LCA had good speed. I would say the advantage Mayfield has in comparison is their defense looks better than that LCA team's defense.

Mayfield is the defending champ and they are the favorite till something happens on the field that changes that. Here is hoping everyone stays healthy, works to be the best they can be and the debates get settled on the field.

I think is is safe to say that Govnah just wants to get that 500 pound gorilla off of Beechwood's back. :scared:

Relax Gov, I think Beechwood is the team to beat, :thumb: we are going to be young and inexperienced :sssh:

Not sure what being the defending champ has to do with this year, I think we will be pretty good but Beechwood is likely the favorite based on returning players. By playoff time we will know alot more about how the young Cards are going to be but returning players favors Bw

I hear you but it has been my experience that when you have a championship team, especially one that was as good as last year's Mayfield team, there usually are a lot more high quality players there than it appears. I have no doubt that Mayfield has some seniors and juniors that are excellent players who played behind a quality senior and can't wait to show what they can do. They wear the favorites crown till we see something that makes people think differently.

True, not to mention when you have so many blow outs like Mayfield had last year alot of kids who will be starting this year got some valuable playing time last year. Plus they have a mentality on what it takes to win, whether they started or not. They know what it will take.

The number of running clocks make this deceving. The running clocks and run straight ahead to avoid making it worse didn't get the youth the time or experience it seems in some of those games

Yes, there are some quality players itchin to go. The Mills kid, Jordan Brown, The Wynn Kid, Louis Love, Kendall and several more that I cant think of. I look for some growing pains but come November at War Memorial they will be tough to beat. I might be a little more optimistic than most but I still think Mayfield is the team to beat in 1A. Beechwood has that potential but I'm not sure they have made up that much ground from last season. It will be a long fun season with lots of words passed back and forth.
