"He Talked Me Into Transferring"

Featured Replies

LN can answer this better than me, but my understanding of the rules is every player with varsity playing time who transfers is automatically ineligible no matter what the circumstances and has to petition the KHSAA to be ruled eligible. Then the KHSAA looks at the situation, sees if any of the exceptions apply and if they do, allows the player to play at the new school.

The thing that makes Sullivan different than the vast majority of these situations is he had no choice in changing schools. He was basically forced to leave Walton Verona and had to find a new school. If he had a choice, my guess is that he would have stayed at WV and graduated from there, but that was not an option for him. Since he had no choice in changing to a new school, it is pretty obvious that he did not change schools due to an athletic reason.

I would say that's accurate.

I just think playing sports is a PRIVILEGE. One loses that privilege, in my opinion, when he does something to be kicked out of a school, especially in half way through his/her senior year.

From my knowledge, and with all respect, you are wrong. The KHSAA doesn't take whether or not the prior school (aka the "sending school" in KHSAA-speak) contests eligibility or not. The KHSAA moved away from that years ago because low quality athletes that transferrred were not opposed by th sending schools but high quality athletes were. That resulted in differing results based on similar facts. Not where the KHSAA wants to be if it is to withstand arbitrary or capricious review by the judiciary.

I gotcha. I was thinking you were saying they like "investigate" every case. I think what was said later on in the thread sums it up. Everyone is ineligible that moves schools, until they apply for reinstatement.

That is so true! I would never deny any child from finishing their education, but when they do something that caused them to get kicked out of school (and this wasn't a little thing), then the PRIVILEGE of any extra-curricular activity should be challenged/denied. Not sure he learned anything from this whole situation other than he actually came out better then he would have if he stayed at WV.

Why does everybody keep saying he was kicked out of school? Did this really happen? Seriously?

And Jupus, you answered my question with saying he could have stayed at WV. So witch is it? Kicked out or Family made a decision to change schools. I'm thinking the latter.

Maybe it wasn't a situation where he got kicked out, but for whatever reason, it was just better that he found a new school.

Really what people are saying in here is when big country is done his senior yr of football at HHS he can then transfer to CC to play baseball! Cause the family chose to do that and that will be ok!!! That way there will be no conflict with baseball anymore and he can just transfer.

Rule #13

Maybe the KHSAA made a mistake letting him transfer, maybe they didn't. Bottom line he is a great kid who had a spectacular senior baseball season. He will always be a friend to all the coaches and players. He is a graduate of NCC and will always be part of the NCC family. People can say what they want, his decision came down to Beechwood and NCC. Cain and Kelly had a huge impact on his decision, they have been friends for years. By the way, Coach Schulkens isnt "in charge" of the 9th region either. People need to get their facts straight!

While Jeff isn't in charge of the Ninth Region, is the go to guy for the Coaches Associations for the Ninth Region. Link and BTW Jeff is too much of a straight shooter to do any thing that wasn't on the up and up!

As a citizen of Walton I must say that it looks pretty bad when one of the administrators sends his kid to a different school. I don't know if Vance was forced to leave or not but if it was a "choice" then the article suggests that Mr. Sullivan thinks NCC is a better place than Walton Verona.

I really hate to jump into a discussion with minimal facts and since this has been moved to the Hot Topics forum can the rest of us who know very little but are still following this thread get a little more background info to develop our own neutral opinions? If I need to be more specific let me know. I am trying to figure out a.) why is he not at Walton Verona?........b.)if it matters if the former school plays a part in protesting the transfer.....c.)why kids words are taken so seriously when the truth of the matter is......all athletes transfer for athletic reasons.....(show me a kid who transfers to a lesser school and it becomes an issue.......just saying.....)......

I really just want to know all of the FACTS so I can develop my own opinion. If a kid is better served at a different high school...by all means....transfer to the school which will help you accomplish your dreams. There is no point in making the kids wait until they go to college to choose the school that better serves their specific needs regardless of when they realize what their specific needs are.

The Sullivan's have moved on! Why can't everyone else?

I agree with your point. I don't know all the circumstances or even if he was kicked out of school, but if he was and if we don't stop rewarding athletes for bad behavior who will? This is becoming a very serious issue. Most all high schools have the student athletes who they have a different set of rules for. I mean who thinks Bud Mackey had never been in trouble at Scott County before his Senior Year? He did get punished, had opportunity after opportunity and still keeps messing up.
