All I will say, is that article is somewhere between poor journalism and totally irresponsible. No more comments from me on this. Best of luck to the Breds. Bring another title to the 9th region!

VOR-I completely disagree with you on this matter, and I say that respectfully. Sullivan has been a big part of the Breds success this year and he did transfer from Walton-all true statements by the writer. I suppose one could argue that there was no need to mention it, but I have found when those facts are omitted there would be many more shouts from the public at large than the one comment that was posted. If the KHSAA didn't have a problem with the transfer then case closed. I am no fan of transfers to be certain, but I feel it would have been irresponsible to not mention it in the article. The only other choice he would have had was to focus on another player so that the issue didn't come up. I have no idea if he was told to do a story on NCC, Sullivan or the choice was entirely his.

June 16, 201115 yr I'm a NewCath guy. As long as all of the rules were followed and the KHSAA gave their approval, then I don't see the issue. I do not have a problem w/ transferring for athletic purposes. I do have a problem if there are benefits or coaches of schools recruit the kids. Going to play w/ a team b/c of your friends, and your parents want to pay tuition, then that is a family decision and should be respected.
June 16, 201115 yr I am going to focus on what Clyde quoted to start the thread. Obviously with the "family moving" from Walton there is a public or private school to choose from in the area that they moved. I think that would be the take on his comments about Cain and not looking at it from a perspective that he transferred from Walton to play with Cain. Now the reporter may be innocently ignorant when he asked the questions and wrote the article. Bottom line is a good kid having a good season that is playing on a new team his senior year is the focus of the story and congrats to him on the article!!!!!!!!!!:thumb:
June 16, 201115 yr Good points all-around. But from the perspective of someone close to the team, a few things to note: First--there is much more to this story than was reported. Everyone associated with HS athletics understands that KHSAA has strict guidelines regarding the issue of transfer, so know that this matter was handled with extreme caution. Second--The mood of the article indicates that the transfer of this student was done casually--that is simply untrue. There were reasons why this boy had to be transferred to another school and the article failed to mention this. I can say that he was not allowed to participate in anything pertaining to baseball (including off-season, voluntary conditioning) until cleared by KHSAA to do so. Anyone who knows Coach Schulkens and the NewCath administration can attest to the fact that the school always tries to lead by example--and given the fact that this team had high aspirations prior to these events, it's hard to believe that they would risk the qualification status of a high-quality team for the sake of one player. I'm certain that all the proverbial "ducks are in a row" concerning this matter. And simply put, if given the choice, I'm sure this player would not have chosen to leave his school mid-way through his senior year.

But the KHSAA clearly states tranfers for athletic purposes are forbidden. But I am glad he was able to move on, and it's worked out for him! I'll just leave it at that.
June 16, 201115 yr Thoroughbird you are correct NCC took no risks. A family moves; they have to go to a public school that they live in or the private school. Paper work is filled out when you move and eligibility is established by the KHSAA. Pretty mundane process. Nothing else in your paragraph applies to his transfer. Now whether you are "close" to the situation or not nothing else really matters as far as his transfer. As far as the article I have read over it a couple times and I think it is bad journalism. Really misleading as far as transferring etc.

June 16, 201115 yr Having met Richard Skinner only once, I can't attest to his "intent" in writing the story, other than the fact that NCC is workign through the State Tournament and he's covering them. I would be surprised if he was intentionally "misleading" or doing anything other than reporting on a side-bar story about a kid making (what could be) a tough adjustment to a new school--and handling it very well. IMO, this seems to be a good kid from a good family. Not sure that I would call it bad journalism because writers can only report on what they know or can verify...and I'm sure that he followed the normal protocols for following the lead. He may have asked the question "why did you transfer", and maybe he simply chose not to follow that thread, based upon the response. Everyone knows that most articles only include a small portion of the actual interview anyway. It's a "feel-good" piece about a kid playing on a local team playing on a big stage. And as a parent, I'm glad that Skinner chose to leave it at that.
