Brohm had a better group of recruits around him- he is still not to Couch Status yet

Being from Brohm's main rival....I still have to give than man his due....He was/is incredible...3 rings are incredible.......and as far as not being at Couch's level yet...I do believe that Brohm's QB rating has been regularly the highest in the country in D1....higher than last year's Heisman winner.

Brohm, after only 3 years as the starter is only about 2,000 yards behind Couch's state records. Couch had 4 years to hit his marks, and Brohm after only 3 years is quite close. To be honest with you, had Brohm been the starter all 4 years, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

If you want to talk stats Burke had a bigger year than both of them this year and his numbers could have been even bigger. All three of them could be strong arguments.

Good point...I can see that too! Burke is good too...I wish he would have gone to UL to replace Brohm when he leaves!

Without a doubt. A]The most dominating high school player I have ever seen or played with. I often felt sorry for the guys lining up against him. I often felt sorry for myself playing on the scout offense across from him. Everybody in America wanted him.

Agree with a couple posters on Mark Higgs (RB) Owenboro Red Devils (UK-Miami Dolphins), a terror in high school. Watched many games in Owensboro where he was unstoppable. A little Barry Sanders. How many years did Dennis Johnson play varsity ball at Harrodsburg? Joe Jacoby played at Western High School in Louisville. I remember watching a game between Iroquois at Manual in 78-79(?) where it was a classic slugfest between two great backs. Chuck Coleman for Iroquois (Tennessee) and Rodney Francis for Manual (UK) what a game! Motquantae Gibson is at Younstown State after leaving UK. Will Wolford was a beast for St. X. Preston Gray (WR) Manual then Michigan State, Kodak & Playboy All-American in 1982. Aaron Payne (RB) - Holy Cross HS - Ohio State. Tony Lnaham (QB) for Southern High School to Curtis Jefferies (WR) for Southern, that was almost automatic in "83. Not some of the most noted names statewide but I I'll always remember seeing some of these people up close.

All the Birds were great but I've heard that Calvin was the best and it's very debatable that he is the greatest high school player of all time in Kentucky.

 

Also another player from Corbin that I would add is Jon Sizemore. I am usually bias for Corbin but I can honestly say that he is the most dominating all around player I've ever seen in High School. He was 6'2" 265 and played running back and linebacker. He was an unbelievable back although not one of the greatest. I will say this much, you'd be hard pressed to find a linebacker not named Micah Johnson that is better. Sizemore was literally a beast and would try to take your soul on every play. He wasn't a dirty player but he wanted you to know it was him that hit you.

 

You do know that Paul Hourning played highschool football in Kentucky right? If I'm not mistaken he did win the Heisman Trophy right--I'm pretty sure Calvin didn't.

Then why wasn't he the starter all 4 years? Say what you want but the numbers don't back you up. Perhaps he should have went to Leslie County and tried to break the records by starting all 4 years. With Leslie County's talent around him instead of the hand picked talent he played with.

I agree, not even hornung can match his stats.

 

Different era. Of course Hourning couldn't match his stats. He was a Wing T back. However, Hourning has something that Alexander can never match--a Heisman Trophy--BEST college player in America. For a losing team, no one in the state of Kentucky can match that--oh and you can throw in the NFL hall of fame. I will not argue about this.

No one is mentioning Mike Pfieffer from Trinity in the early-mid 80's he was a high school all-american and a college all-american at UK in the mid-late 80's. Knee injuries derailed his NFL career but he was one of the best offensive lineman from Kentucky ever.

Its hard to beat 3 straight titles for Brohm, not many hs qb's can claim that. Sure Couch's numbers were better but where are his rings?

Knew him!!! Heck i used to get hit by him week in and week out in practice. I used to hate when Roger would say, I need all of the backs over for Hamburger drill. You know QB's don't like getting hit, especially from a 235lb linebacker at full speed. :eek:

I remember this guys name, think he came to Kentucky at one point(correct me if I am wrong). Monquantea Gibson from Moore. Never saw him play a high school game but his numbers are pretty impressive. 696 career points scored, 288 points scored in one season, 54 points scored in one game (9TD's w/574 rush yds) vs. Shawnee in 2001 (if someone saw this game please tell what you saw and how this happened. Sounds unbelieveable!!), 110 career TD's, and 6,741 career rushing yds. Anyone remember???

Mark Higgs was the best and Shaun Alexander by far
