With regard to my previous post I may be somewhat incorrect as I'm not sure when Freshman began being allowed to play NCAA basketball. The UCLA example I used may be that individual players would have only been on 3 championship teams, but even so I don't think anyone else has even 3 peat.

You could argue for Couch based on the fact that USA Today named him their first team QB on their all-time high school football list amongst names like Randy Moss, Charles Rogers, Emmitt Smith, etc.

If Couch had Brohms supporting cast we wouldn't be having this discussion. I still say there is no question it's Couch based on high school career.

Brian Brohm did in 3 years stats wise what Couch did in 4. Plus, Brohm won 3 titles, to Couch's 0.

Brohm has a better completion ratio, better passer rating, and a better record.

You can't simply use those stats to compare two players head to head in a team sport. If this were tennis or golf stats might mean more. But neither Brohm or Couch obtained those stats on their own. If no one catches the ball there is no yards, completions, rating, etc. If no one blocks than there is likely not even a pass. I realize that you will never change your opinion but it is hardly case closed. These two QB are probably pretty even when it comes to ability. Had Coach had the luxury to stand behind Trinity's line and throw to Trinity's receivers I'd be willing to bet that he would have somewhat better stats that he did, probably would have won a ring or two as well.

 

I realize that this discussion is based on high school careers, but players in the NFL draft are put under a microscope before being selected and Coach came out #1 (in hindsite a bad decision) but he must have had something going for him for this decision to be made.

 

Football is a team sport, you can't simply use passing stats to compare two players, there are too many intangibles. An awesome RB would probably not have very good stats behind the o-line of say Todd Co. Central, but an avg. back would be able to get better stats running behind the o-line of St. X.

Considering the caliber of teams that Brian competed against I would say that there would have been no chance Couch could have approached the same numbers as Brian without the same supporting cast. To put that in a different way, the talent around Brian is negated by the quality of teams that he played against. Brian's best games were against his best competition. Male 2002, Elder 2002, MBA 2003, St.x 2003(both times). I doubt Couch played teams even close to that caliber in high school.

Good arguement, at least it is offering some valid information to prove your point. I'm not really trying to prove that Coach is better than Brohm, I could really care less. I just get irked when some label this discussion as case closed etc. due to three championships. I think that this is a very valid discussion. Brohm certainly accomplished more in the way of team goals but as I have pointed out State Titles aren't just due to individual effort, although he was a large part of the reason for their success. I just think that everyone should enter this discussion with an open mind.
