Coach Cal and recruiting depth

Featured Replies

No Kanter has nothing to do with their lack of depth in the backcourt.

He really can't help it that Bledsoe and Orton left. When he recruited them he probably did not expect either of those two to be one and done.

I know that UK fans were happy to get Coach Cal and that he was happy to come here too. Between the fan expectations and other pressures, I believe that he should have never left Memphis. In some ways, I'm sure he's already got some regrets about it.

So basically Cal didn't have a Plan B when he recruited Wall, Cousins, and Bledsoe?

Do you think others have plan B for losing 5 players to the 1st round ? They expected 3 but not 5 .

I'm struggling with the numbers game here.

There were 13 players on the roster last year. You knew you were losing Harris, Krebs, and Stevenson (seniors). That leaves 10. You pretty much knew Patterson was leaving early. That leaves nine. Wall, Cousins, and Orten were gone. That leaves six. Bledsoe was a maybe, but you have to figure at some point, Calipari knew he was leaving. That leaves five, Dodson included. That's eight spots Cal knew he was going to have to fill to get back to 13. His recruiting class was five, excluding Kanter and Polson. He was foolish if he was banking on Kanter playing. Polson was added late.

So now we are at 10, with Dodson but no Kanter. Dodson leaves. Back to nine. You know you are going to lose Harralson as a senior. Back to eight. If everyone comes back, you add a recruiting class of four plus Beckham in December. Back to 13. But if Knight and Jones and possibly Liggins leave early, You are at 10 at the start of the season -- 9 until Beckham comes eligible. That nine includes Polson and Stacey Poole.

He currently has a roster of 10, that includes Polson and Poole. Even with Dodson and Kanter gone, it's still not the 13 he had last year.

10 now. Lose three (Harralson, Knight and Jones) gain five (Beckham included). IT STILL EQUALS 12!! 11 to start the season.

Both the 96 and 98 teams had 13 players on the roster. Most of Tubby' teams did also.

If he is recruiting the one and dones, why not fill the roster to 13 because you know you will have turnover.

With UK struggling some this year, does anyone think Cal will leave UK after this year and take a higher-paying pro job? UK basketball fans are notorious for demanding a winning team NOW and surely he will start feeling the heat if his team continues to struggle in conference play, no???

UK is paying him NBA money to keep him here. I really think at this point in his life he loves the 2 games per week and going to all the free resteraunts he can in Lexington during the week lol. He has re-energized the state and will prob bring a final 4 or two before he's done. He has a monster class coming in next year and probably will each year. With Kanter in this class this is a different team.

Orton and Bledsoe did not want to go to school and were offered a ton of money.... not that hard of a decision.

No way. Guys like Cal love the big stage and pressure of a place like UK. He was made for this place.

I completely disagree. Coach Cal knew what he was getting into when he took the UK job...that is why it was his dream job.

The recruiting game has changed 10 fold since '96, '98. There are not a host of good players just hanging around to be signed unless you fill it with JUCO transfers (Vargas) or back-up back-up plans like Bobby Perry that bring nothing to the table. All these guys are committed and/or signed before the season gets underway. While I think there could be room for another guy or two on the roster, I am not one that feels you should completely fill a roster because you have space.

If you knew Bledsoe and Orton were leaving last season, you need to be working for an NBA team scouting. Cousins was not even a lock to leave until SEC play started.

This is year two for Cal. He did what he could in a very short time table as far as recruiting goes in year one. I think this year, Cal will luck out and Lamb and Knight will probably be back. So, I think you'll see a lot more depth next year. Just have to ride this year out.

I love what Coach Cal does with recruiting but my concerns are for the next 2yrs adn the big guys we got. Everyone keeps pointing to Anthony Davis but if you watch this kid he's exactly like John Henson at UNC. Very underweight and not that skilled as a post player.

This team won last season because they had solid post players in Cousins, Orton, Patterson, even Stevenson who could play with the backs to the basket. What you guys thoughts on this? I still think we are struggling this season b/c we don't have a a true post player and we won't for a few more yrs it looks like.

#1 - Learn the kids' names. Orton, Harrellson

#2 - Nobody thought Orton was one and done.

#3 - Krebs is a walk on level talent. Losing him doesn't count

#4 - He was rebuilding a team with a severe talent shortage. Patterson was the only significant upperclassmen. If there was better talent on the team, he wouldn't have had to play the freshman as many minutes, and they'd probably still be around.

#5 - He know's he's recruiting 1 and done players, but you don't know 100% who is leaving and who is staying. Jones is probably a lock to leave, but Knight and Lamb could both leave or both stay. You can't give away their scholarships until you know.

#6 - Polson will go back to a walk on next year (if needed), so there is another spot.

#7 - Why are you assuming Cal is done recruiting for 2012? Deandre Daniels and Trevor Lacey are still on the board IIRC.

The fact that we're questioning the coach of a 3 loss team from last year is pretty amusing. He's simply short on players. There is no way anyone knew (or even said was likely) that Patterson, Orton, Bledsoe, and Kanter would all not be playing this year. Add a couple of those guys back in, and this team could look completely different.

Also, people are arguing to recruit 4 year players, but trashing Hood and Poole who were both 4* recruits. Those guys are both young and have time to develop.

No Kanter has nothing to do with their lack of depth in the backcourt.

Lack of depth in the backcourt?

Knight, Lamb, Liggins, & Miller are all very good guards. Hood stinks and I can't comment on Poole because I haven't seen him play much. The front court is a much bigger cause for concern.

:thumb: Definitely the front court is the problem. Harrelson should be a 10-15 minute back up. Jones thinks he is a guard and won't play on the block. Vargas ... to be kind, a work in progress. If UK is going to do anything in the post season, Jones has to play more low post with his back to the basket, especially the last 4 minutes of the game. If Jones makes himself a presence in the post, he could open up shots for Lamb and Knight on kick outs (assuming he would kick it back out ).
