What is going on with the baby birds? Any more 7 on 7's scheduled? Have the trio of Hoge, Urlage and Abner returned to practice with the Birds? How did things go for them in the all-star game that they played in. Are they still carrying 50+ kids on the roster or have some started to drop off? Things are rather quiet with the big Trinity game only about a month away.

 

Things went pretty well for the 3 of them. They did indeed win their game but they didn't keep score. We scored 5 times with 2 of them Defensive scores and held Team Sweden Gold to 0 TD's....As R-Bird mentioned, Beau Hoge had an Int inside the 10 yard line in the last minute of the game to secure the goose egg. The kids were unbelievable on and off the field. They met several new friends from just about everywhere in the U.S. and quite a few from Team Sweden.

 

Let me be the first to tell you, that the 3 of them walked away better football players that's for sure. There are some real gamers out there that can play the game of football and tested each other on each and every rep. It was truly amazing to watch!!! I know that Andrew,Beau and Griffin were all humbled by their experience to play at that level of play.

Not sure how they'll do this season, but Scott's frosh last year won the "small" school NKY frosh championship. Technically speaking, I know they're probably not a small school, but still good for a program that's been struggling for some time now.

I think Scott will be much improved over the next few years. Coach Campbell is doing a fine job in Taylor Mill. Now that Scott will pretty much have a true feeder with the start up of the Taylor Mill Eagles youth program. They are a totally new organization in the NKYFL this year..This will help Scott tremendously with numbers and quality football players in the future.

Well, the buses all broke down on the way over because Scott had 10 kids show up this morning with 1 coach. I give them credit though to walk into that environment and look across the filed at the numbers that Highlands has. Hey, I know its 7 on 7, you only need 7 right.

Scott does have about 20 kids playing freshman ball this year and the other coaches at the freshman level aren't teachers and have day jobs. They are short on skill players and will likely struggle, but they do have some good kids on the team that will fit nicely with the class ahead of them. The program is improving, and the numbers are great with the NKYFl teams, especially at the junior level, which has a talented bunch of kids at the 6th grade level.

Scott did bring only 10 kids to the 7 on 7, while the Birds dressed 30. Kudos to the Eagles players for competing for several sets of 10-15 plays which allowed the Birds coaches to get most of the kids some reps.

And that will be when there is separation between the contenders and the pretenders. The great equalizer in football is when the pads go on.

How are things going for the baby birds? Do they have an intrasquad scrimmage this week as well? Who are some of the kids that have impressed now that the pads have gone on? I heard that they had a new player join their ranks this week and that he has looked good in practice.

I'm not sure about the pretender/contender labels. I don't think your freshman football year at Highlands necessarily defines what kind of player you're going to be. It doesn't seem to be that uncommon to see freshman contenders backing up freshman pretenders a couple of years down the road. Good luck to the freshman in 2011.

I came away being impressed with the tackling by the frosh in the scrimmage.

HHS freshman play Trinity Sat. AM at 11. Does anyone know how Trinity's freshman look? Word has it they have a stud running back that probably should be playing Varsity.
