The IU player was moved up to the pro team during his third year with the club, so he may have been 19 at the time? Kanter was moved up for 4 games while he was still 16.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know much about the situation.

Good find! :thumb:

I had to  when he said he learned a lot of English by "texting with the peoples."

That part made me burst out laughing. Some of that interview was hilarious.

He was real excited telling about his grades in class :thumb: And how he started talking about his speech in speech class was funny, lol.

They say he is one of the funniest guys on the team, too.

I just wish I was there to hear his speech on "the candies".

He seems like a really really nice, good kid.

Seems to me that the fact that he was paid 33,033 dollars to play basketball is what will ultimately deny him the opportunity to suit up as a Cat. He was paid to play basketball which relinquishes his amateur status and that is the difference between he and Selby. Selby was not paid to play basketball. I'll be shocked if he wins this appeal. Seems cut and dry to me. Regardless of the amount, regardless of whether it was spent or not, regardless of whether or not he was going to use it for tutoring, he was paid to play basketball. Just my take.

He wasn't paid to play basketball...He was paid for expenses. The 33K was for education expenses, which is allowed, the only problem is the Turkish team gave the money directly to the Kanter's instead of the university. The excess money is still in a never touched bank account, and they've attempted to give it back to the team, but they refuse to accept it.

You're right Selby was paid by an agent...Much much worse.

The NCAA said Newton is ok to play even though his dad shopped him for $180,000. I know it's a different sport, but come on.

He was given money by a Turkish pro team because he played basketball for them. To me it is that simple. If the Nets gave Selby money for expenses and he played for the Nets then Selby would be a pro bball player right?

And I am not comparing who is worse. IMO, if Camby and Maggette and Bush are ineligible for receiving gifts and money then Selby should be too. I just think where it is known that Kanter received 33,033 extra from a pro basketball team he will be ruled ineligible. But who knows, some guys receive money from agents and just get 9 game suspensions so who knows?

It would be simple if the European system was anything remotely like the US system. What if there were no AAU in the US, and instead the NBA teams had club teams? It really blurs the line between pro and amateur.

To me, this decision is whether the NCAA wants European players or not.

I can buy that. It seems like it is a whole other can of worms the NCAA would get into by allowing European players and the Kanter case will set the precedent for those that play in Europe and receive some kind of money for it. Definitely going to be interesting to see how this pans out. I hope he can play. I hate to see things that it seems he can't control be the end of a college career before it gets started. I just don't think he'll be allowed to.
