So what do you say to a team like Fort Knox that knocked off #1 seed Glasgow...do you take that away from the kids just because some teams get beat badly in the first round? Look at other states...the same thing happens there too. There will be some upsets every year from 4's over 1's and 3's over 2's, so why eliminate those kids over some lopsided scores?

 

If you're in favor of 4 seeds and a big majority of teams getting in the playoffs, you may not want to look at how other states do it. OH sometimes has 1 loss teams missing their playoffs.

I am all for streamlining the football playoffs ... as soon as we also eliminate basketball district tournaments. Who wants to see an 80-20 basketball game? Why should basketball teams that are 2-20 be allowed in the "playoffs" (i.e. district tournament). Let's eliminate basketball district tournaments and just take the top 2 winners of the regular season district games and put them in the regional. When this happens in basketball ... and baseball ... and soccer ... and etc. .... then I will say let's cut back the football playoffs.

 

I for one would agree with your proposals VOR. I think the playoffs should be earned for what it is worth.

complete failure for any reasonable objective.

 

What the reasons:

Giving every kid a chance to play in the post season and get 1 more game of snaps - fails. About 30 teams or around 1,500 kids do not play post season. Why? Because they are unlucky enough to be a 5 or 6 team district.

Recognizes intermediate and meaningful achievements for teams that are building or coming up - fails. Not everyone can be state champions, it takes steps to get there for new or building programs. But there is no measuring this progress and before teams get to the 'elite' level their kids have probably lost interest.

Provides interest in all rounds of games - fails. Maybe some good games at the 2-3 level but most 1-4s are blowouts in the first round. Go to blind draw with 7 or 8 teams in a bracket.

 

This current setup of 6 classes and micro-small districts leads to 5 weeks of pure 'Survivor' type games. In the end there are only 6 teams that feel good and 216 or so that were eliminated along the way. Even the NFL does a better job and crowning its division and Conference Champions.

 

This system is damaging to Kentucky High School football.

We all know it is about nothing more than $$$. The KHSAA doesn't care about anything else in this matter. However, I do believe we need to keep bringing it up or the issue will die and never get fixed.

And I think that is alot more of a fraudulent joke, a fiasco of epic proportions than our system.

I cannot understand why people are so against this system. Who does it hurt? If your a one seed and you dominate a four seed, great. It's another week of practice and your JV kids get on-field work in a playoff game. If you get dominated what the hell, chances are you have been dominated before and its an extra week of practice and a little more gate money. Most of the people that are against it insist on the importance of spring ball when most schools dont have all their players there at that time. At least post-season provides all kids on those teams an opportunity for more practice. Most teams get more practice, more revenue and an extra week of football, oh the madness.

The powers that be can't really think this is a good thing. You have bad teams who wish their season had ended weeks ago and you force them to travel to gosh forsaken places to serve as cannon fodder for home crowds.

How do you think the supporters of Shawnee feel? Can't even field a team and are in the playoffs.

2-8 teams traveling two hours plus to play playoff games.

Play an 8-9 game regular season schedule and let everyone in.

I agree, let's make the football playoffs like the basketball. Everyone makes the playoffs but we only have 1 state champ overall. That would be exciting. There are just not enough schools to support a 6 class system. Next year, to be state champs in A or 6A, you only have to best of 32 schools. In many states, there are over 50 schools competing just in the region, not for state. Though, not in favor of Ohio's system, I like you have to schedule touch competition if you want to make the playoffs as well as play your district. I do not like Indiana's either as everyone makes the playoffs, kind of like here. I am sure we could put something together to make a majority happy.

 

As far as money is concerned, how many schools made money on the 1st round of playoffs. My guess is very few. Bad weather, not exciting matchups, travel, and costs, I would say very few actually made money this week.

With all of the complaints on the playoff system, I am sure the players, school and fans of the two teams that will win the state tournament that many of you are saying shouldn't be there, won't complain or be unhappy or think that they have won a tainted championship.

Some people just aren't happy unless their whining or complaining. To say the current system is watered down may be a legit complaint, but, to say that the amount of teams making the playoffs hurts Kentucky High School football is flat out silly. Any dollar earned for you athletic program is important for funding all the non-producing and title 9 sports, it also seems obvious that as with everything in life, the more you do something the higher the chances are that you'll get better at it, so every practice and game is making the majority of those participating better...
