What has happened to Kentucky High School football is a simple disgrace. No other state attempts to manipulate and gerrymander the set up like here. It is truly sad.

 

I think the way Kentucky hangs on to an outdated Basketball Playoff system is a disgrace as well.

Any other sport crown more than 2 state champions? Most sports only have 1 state champion while football serves up 6 state champions. That is a big difference between the sports. I am surprised there is no outrage in only allowing 4 teams. If you are unlucky enough to be in a district with 5 teams, why should that 5th seed have to sit home when a district with only 4 teams everyone automatically makes the playoffs? Seems a bit unfair.

 

I guess the 5th seed did not earn it, I mean come on if you can't get the 4 seed in a 5 team district. I suppose not everyone gets to the playoffs in the current system.

In the 1980s, you had teams capable of challenging for a state title because only the district champion advanced.

 

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, only two teams from each district made it and if memory serves, it was schools from Louisville and NKY that openly complained about quality teams not making the playoffs because of the strength of the top two teams.

 

Now four teams is too many.

 

Which is it? Football is the only sport where every school does not automatically qualify for the postseason tournament. Why is four too many? Why is there no outrage for the other sports that lets EVERYONE in?

 

Actually the change to two teams from each district was made in the late 70's. I remember in the early 70's when there were 3 classes and AAA consisted of just teams from Jefferson County. The other 2 classes were comprised of all the other schools in the state. People complained then too that Louisville schools won to many titles.

 

The more things change the more they stay the same.

System is terribly broken. 6 classes is a farce. Sending horid teams to the playoffs should embarrass the horid teams. It needs to be changed to 4 classes ASAP.

Why should football be the only sport that doesn't allow everyone into the playoffs? There are horrible teams in every other sport that "water down" the postseason.

Put all the football teams into one, two, or three classes, so they are on even ground with all the other sports, and I'll be all for letting them all in the playoffs.

Really? Do you have to ask this? How many classes are there for baseball, volleyball, soccer?

 

Didn't the six class thing kind of jump out as a qualifier to your questions?

All I can say is that I am happy to live so close to Ohio, where you EARN your way into the playoffs! And where it's not watered down! Stands are more full as most teams and their fans know they have a chance in a first round game, until in KY. In SOME games you may have a 4 beat a 1, but those are not often, and not worth having a 6 class system, back to 4 classes, or even 5.

 

I agree with this totally SportsGuy, and the other thing to mention about the way Ohio does it is that is forces you to schedule up if you want to QUALIFY for the playoffs. You can't water down your schedule, because there is a good chance you won't make the playoffs. Teams have gone unbeaten many times and not even made the playoffs in Ohio. So really it helps with folks not playing each other too!!

Ohio has over 800 schools while Kentucky only a little over 200. So they can not get all of the teams in. But it it is interesting that they have a) only 6 classes and b) they populate the classes to in a even manner no arbitrary limits on largest or smallest classes. They also only have 24 Regions (6 x 4) vs. the same as Kentucky with our 1/4 less schools.
