Any baseball person who says that Chipper Jones is not a Hall of Fame player instantly loses credibility in my book.

Compare these numbers to the 3rd baseman currently in the HOF.

 

Jones' .307 AVG ranks tied for 4th with Frank Baker. They're behind only Wade Boggs (.328), Pie Traynor (.320), and Freddie Lindstrom (.311). They're barely ahead of George Brett (.305) & George Kell (.306).

 

Jones' .406 OBP would be 2nd, behind only Wade Boggs (.415).

 

Jones' slugging percentage (.540) would be #1, ahead of Mike Schmidt (.527) and Eddie Mathews (.509) who are the only others above .500.

 

Jones' home runs would rank 3rd, behind Mike Schmidt (548) and Eddie Mathews (512). Next closest is George Brett with 317.

 

Jones' 1,450 RBI would currently rank 4th, behind George Brett & Mike Schmidt (1,595) and Eddie Mathews (1,453). Assuming Jones is capable of getting 4 more RBI this year, he'll move into 3rd.

 

Jones is a sure-fire hall of fame player and likely the best 3rd baseman of the past 20+ years.

He also had 8+ seasons of 100+ RBI's. It was closing in on some kind of record for 3B as well.

To me, the First Ballot guys are transformational type players. The elite of the elite. Ruth, Mays, Williams, Cobb, etc. I do not put Chipper Jones in that type of company. He has been a really good player for many years, but nothing extraordinary. Hall of Fame worthy, but not of the first go around variety (rather the second).

Yes. Either the guy is worthy or not. First ballot baloney is for guys who have never played yet still have a vote to mull over in a conference call with one another.

He will finish with 2500+ hits and right at 500 HR's, to go along with all the awards and a WS ring. Plus I love the fact that he has played for 1 team and is easily recognizable as being a brave. That is rare in today's game!! Definite HOF'er....

I do see your point. But, do they seperate them in the HOF once they are there? Are the first ballot guys in one room, 2nd ballot in another, 3rd ballot, etc? I agree that there is a difference between the regular HOF players and the elite/transcendent players like the ones you mentioned. But if they don't seperate them once in the HOF, why do it before? Either they belong in or they don't. JMHO.

I am not sure they are separate in Cooperstown though I am sure there is some type of notation; but to me there is a clear distinction between Babe Ruth, Tom Seaver, and Walter Johnson from guys like Chipper Jones, Andre Dawson, and Jim Rice.

 

I am fine going with the one time and your out voting system though. In which case my standards go even higher. In that case, Chipper would be right on the very edge in my book, to probably not making it. If I have to sit around and think about it and stat guy has to come to his side, he is not a Hall of Famer in my book.
