How could you not vote for him first ballot? He'll retire within 5 years so what other players at that time will knock him out? I'd say not many. Chipper has been a great 3B over his career. No steroid use, excellent offense for his position and to be able to do it consistently at that. Has won MVP, World Series, batting title, plus other awards. One of the best switch hitters to ever play the game.

Really good player, just not an all time great, which is my standard for being on the first ballot which should be reserved for a select few. When I think of Chipper and his career, I think of an above average player that is very seldom discussed as one of the top 5 players in the game each season. I just do not see him as any type of a transcendent type talent.

Chipper is in that graceful fade part of his career. If he can remain as productive as he has the last few years, it will take him at least 4 and probably 5 years to get to 3,000 hits. That puts him at age 43. What do you think the chances are of 3,000?

I don't know that I would use "fragile" to describe Chipper. He has had his fair share of knicks and bruises, but he played in over 140 games last year at 37 years old.

 

With that said, I don't see him playing for more than 2 seasons (after this one).

No, it has nothing to do with numbers. When you have to try and make a case for a guy based upon numbers, they are not first ballot worthy, imo. I have no idea how many saves Mo Rivera has or needs to be the all time leader, and it does not matter. He is a first ballot guy.

That is a fair point, but I have no idea who did or did not use PEDs the last 20+ years, Chipper included. I do not believe he did, but I cannot say with certainty simply because he was never implicated.
