What might KY football realignment look like?

One thing is for certain......the current 6 class alignment isn't working. You have the same teams X + Trinity winning at the top....Highlands always is there, and NCC, Boyle County, Mayfield, Bell County, Beechwood, etc. Maybe it is time to admit there are good football programs and not so good football programs, and if the not so good programs want to get better the way to do it is with hard work, good coaching and dedicated players, parents and administrations. More classes, or making certain certain public schools in large cities win or whatever isn't the way to improve the quality of our state's programs or players.

Football shouldn't be the "feel good" panacea for downtrodden communities. As a matter of fact, if those teams do win against less teams, or lesser teams, it will actually diminish their "accomplishment" in the eyes of the others. The best champions and championship games are derived when everybody knows the best two teams are playing....like X vs. Trinity, or Male/Trinity, etc. (Or for UKFan 36 when SK plays Trinity) :scared:

Here's an update blog entry from Ryan to his earlier blog entry on the subject: http://cincinnati.com/blogs/preps/2010/04/22/realignment/

Another by the way: Ryan is a great guy and dedicated high school sportswriter.

LN,

Thanks for the update and accurate information; I wouldn't think this would be great for many. Ryan does a a good job reporting on the NKY scene; and I enjoy his column. In this case I am glad a retraction is being made as it would mean travel for some and I am certain it would diminish some titles for some schools moving forward. I am certain some changes are coming; but that would be very interesting....

No problem.

To be clear, Ryan's update post doesn't mean that what his original post stated is not going to happen. It could. But I just wanted it clarified that the "plan" didn't have the official support of the KHSAA; at least not at this time anyway.

Heck, for all I know Tackett may like the plan, as koachshr's post seems to indicate, athough the e mail he sent Ryan would indicate that, at a minimum, he is not ready to "officially" indicate such support.

We'll all see in due time. Honestly I haven't thought the discussed plan through enough to decide if I like it our not. My original post in this thread was to simply point out that the plan wasn't necessarily something that was "official".

This is what I came up with. I used only this past year's boys enrollments (and this year will be a part of the process - not sure if it will be averaged with 08/09 or 10/11), made a rough estimate of the impact of Martha Layne Collins and South Warren (straight split of the number Shelby County had which was 952, 35% of Greenwood's number into South Warren and taking 50 boys from the Warren Central total), and included the special movements up in class that we've had in the past (Highlands, CovCath, Russellville, East Carter - can't remember any others).

The number beside the school is their male enrollment. As the KHSAA does when they do realignment, the number is doubled for all-male schools.

There are 223 schools in this. The KHSAA divides that evenly across 6 classes. If the number does not divide perfectly even, they add one to the number beginning with the lowest class. In this case, 222/6 = 37, so the extra school goes into the 1A class, giving them 38 to begin with. NewCath and Owensboro Catholic had an identical number, so I placed them both in 1A. When teams move up in class (like Highlands and CovCath), I don't believe the lowest teams in the class get moved down, so I left those teams put. For instance, Owensboro and Mercer County are the lowest in 5A, but don't move down to 4A just because Highlands and CovCath move up in class to 5A. I think that's how that works.

BTW, just a trivia note. St. Henry has the highest male enrollment of a school that does not play football with 514. They'd be a 5A school if they did.

Maybe that's why St. Henry keeps avoiding football - having to play 5A. Cov Cath and a few other schools are sure happy they don't field a team.

As to Ernst updating his list using boys enrollment in his blog, Highlands fans will like the alignment better using the boys enrollment. Last team to make it into 4A using those numbers. Hopefully the Birds have a lot of boys in this incoming freshman class.

St. Henry is a coed school ... are you sure they have 514 boys? If so, they've grown immensely in the last year or two.

You are right. That number is total enrollment. They have 268 boys. So now I have no explanation at all why St. Henry doesn't have football.

Hmmm. Columns must have gotten screwed up on that one when I did the conversion from PDF. I'll have to look again at what the real largest is when I get back to the office.

OK, checked on it. I was right, St. Henry does have the highest male enrollment of a non-football school, but it's 268 boys. I read the wrong column last time. That amount would make St. Henry a middle of the pack 2A school, still larger than 25% of the schools that do play football.

This is the plan that Julian Tackett is pushing for. I know that for a fact and since he is the most influencial person in high school administration I would say there is a good chance that it passes.

Also I believe that the class A would be split into 4 4 team districts and played at a different site than the other championships. Which in my opinion is good because its sad to see a 1A crowd in A big stadium. This i do not know about though.

Here is what I think that class A will look like.

District 1- Fulton county, Fulton city, Louisville HC, Eminence

District 2- Bellevue, Dayton, Fairview, Paintsville

District 3- Paris, Frankfort, Campbellsville, and Williamsburg

District 4- Phelps, Harlan, Jenkins, Pineville

District 1 is tough allignment.. Makes me wish that Fulton city and Fulton Co would consolidate and then alignment would be better

If this is what he likes. I think it would make more since travel wise

District 1 - Fulton Co. , Fulton City, Lou. Holy Cross, Campbellsville

District 2 - Bellevue, Dayton, Eminence, Frankfort

District 3 - Paris, Fairview, Paintsville, Williamsburg

District 4- Phelps, Harlan, Jenkins, Pinville

Now I say this just looking at the state map and not taking in how highways are built. Either way it is a long dirve.

If there is going to be 16 teams in Class A. Have no districts, and seed the teams based on points system.

Beat 6A team get 60 points

Beat 5 A team get 50 points

Beat 4 A team get 40 points

Beat 3 A team get 30 points

Beat 2 A team get 20 points

Beat 1 A team get 10 points.

Play 6A team get 30 points

Play 5 A team get 25 points

Play 4 A team get 20 points

Play 3 A team get 15 points

Play 2 A team get 10 points

Play 1 A team get 5 points.

So I think what we end up with is Class A teams playing a solid schedule and working to get better. Then you seed them 1-16 and hold a playoff. That way it offers for different match ups every year in the playoffs.
