What might KY football realignment look like?

Featured Replies

If this 1A alignment is true, then Bellevue's only real competition for a state championship each year would be Dayton and Frankfort.

Good news for all you Tiger Fans!!

Check the bottom 16 teams again. There is a lot more competition there than Frankfort. I see all these teams as state title contenders in a 16 team class based on the list in this thread - Hazard, Lou. Holy Cross, Frankfort, Emminence and Bellevue. Plus, in a class that small, two top caliber players could make a solid team into a contender. That class would be up for grabs with Hazard and Frankfort the top two powers and Bellevue just behind them.

I see I mixed my procedures. I knew that it was male enrollment only, but when I read their handbook - http://www.khsaa.org/handbook/tournamentrules/fbtournamentrules.pdf - they still haven't changed the wording. It does still say in there:

But above that it talks about total enrollment, not male only. I read the part about doubling without accounting for the fact it is male only now. The handbook also says the state shall be divided into four classes even though it then lists six, so there's several things they need to audit.

What that means for my enrollment is that where you see male only schools, cut them in half and slot them down. Where you move them down, push another team into the next class.

After reviewing your link, I can see why you did what you did. The handbook apparently is wrong. Hopefully someone at the KHSAA can see that it's corrected.

IMO, here's the best possible alignment as it stands. Take the largest 24 and make that 6a and the smallest 24 and make that 1a, then split the 2a,3a,4a,5a equally. Those 2 classes have the biggest size differential from top to bottom and this would help that a little. You'd have to have 8 3 team classes in 1a because of the distance between schools and the winner of each district would get an automatic bye in the 1st round of the playoffs. I'd also use a 1.5 factor on the privates and allow teams to play up if they wish unless it would cause unrealistic geographic problems or cause a district to be short teams. Here's how my classes would look:

1a

D1 - Fulton Co, Fulton City, Russellville

D2 - Caverna, Bethlehem, Campbellsville

D3 - KCD, Frankfort, Eminence

D4 - Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow

D5 - Lynn Camp, WBurg, Harlan

D4 - Dunbar, Ttates Creek, BStation, Henry Clay, Lafayette, Madison Cen

4A District 7 should have Perry Central in it and District 8 should have Johnson Central included in that district. That would make more sense geographically. I wonder when the new allignment will be made known?

D7 - Grant Co, Lincoln Co, Whitley Co, Lex Catholic, Montgomery Co

I don't think there is anyway they make Grant County/Whitley County travel from basically the TN state line to the Ohio State line to play a game.

I personally prefer the smallest 24 schools in 1A instead of the smallest 16. I don't think 16 teams is enough for a class, and the travel for only 16 teams is going to be just crazy. Some 1A teams travel two hours for district games now with 32 teams, what would it be like if only 16 teams were in 1A? I don't know if three team districts would work either, maybe six team districts. All though, I do like the possibility of scheduling seven non-district games.

Ya'll are prob right abt some of the alignments. I was strickly going off memory and current alignments when I came up with those, not really knowing the exact location and travel time, especially the eastern teams. I'm sure it would have to be tweeked like ya'll proposed.

I am amazed on how many more students that Trinity and St. X have than the rest of the state. According to those numbers:

St. Xavier 2,912

Trinity (Louisville) 2,762

and the lowest 6A teams

Apollo 683

Christian County 672

I don't even need to say anything there, just stated facts

That is a pretty amazing statistic.

Well, remember, I crossed my procedures. St. X and Trinity's numbers were doubled for my enrollment, a process they no longer do. The two actually have 1456 and 1381 males respectively. Now, granted, they still have twice as many as the smallest 6A teams.

Why don't they double the number of boys if it is an all boys school? It seems like an advantage to not have girls. My only guesses would be some title 9 type of thing, or they wanted to mask the disparity of enrollment.

I think you missed the explanation above. They are only counting boys in the co-ed schools for football. The number of girls in a school has no impact on football classes. They only count the number of boys in a school to determine their football classification.

In the past, the KHSAA used total enrollment for football classification. In the case of a co-ed school, only about half of those students are male typically. In the case of an all male school, the KHSAA would double the total (boys) enrollment in order to account for all of the girls (who typically don't play football) at co-ed schools. Nothing sinister about it, just a way to get schools with approximately the same number of boys in the same class.

The process has since been changed. Now the KHSAA classifies all schools based on male enrollment numbers. There is no need to double enrollment for all male schools.

That is a pretty amazing statistic.

X actually has 1456 and T has 1381...The KHSAA site has all the all boy schools enrollment figures doubled. Still, that's a big discrepancy, either way...However, schools like Henry Clay, Dunbar, Eastern, Henderson Co and Scott Co aren't that far behind with 1000 or more, themselves... Even though teams like Apollo and Christian are at a disadvantage #s wise, it's not like you can't field a very competitive team with 700 or so boys in your top 4 grades...Highlands has 425 boys and they seem to do okay...

HAHA you are completly correct. I just completly missed it. Wow I feel dumb now.
