Did WVU just freak against UK, or is Duke really that good?? Watching the Mountaineers clank the 3's that were swishing last Saturday against KY made me wonder, if the "perfect storm" of one team shooting "lights out" vs. one team's inability "to throw it in the ocean" just collided last week?? Not that it matters a lot now, but thoughts?

Hard to say but I don't think you are to far off. That is the nature of the beast with a tournament like that. Teams that are hot move on and teams with a bad game like UK get beat. I think if UK and WVU play 10 times(With Mazulla at PG) UK probably wins 7 or 8 times. Just happened to be one of those games. Might have been a good thing because a loss to Duke in the FF would have been an epic meltdown in Big Blue Nation. :lol:

Thus is "March Madness". The best team doesn't always win. Anything could happen on any given night. Not trying to take away from what WVU did to UK but it just happens. The fact that UK played so badly and WVU shoot so well and UK still was there at the end just tells you how good this team really was.

 

I also feel like matchups were a major problem with WVU tonight. They seemed to get into a shooting contest with Duke and you simply can't do that. But I don't want to take away from either team. They earned the right to be there and congrats to Duke. They proved me (and a lot of us, even some Dukie fans) wrong.

It's all about matchups, and it wasn't a great matchup for UK and they shot poorly to boot.

They played man most of the game. They got flat out beat straight up.

I thought the same during the game. I also would like to have seen UK's defense match up with this Duke squad. However, the truth is that I think Duke's defense tonight would have also stopped UK and unless KY actually hit the shots they too would have fallen to the Devils this evening. It would have been fun to have seen but that's why they play them and only one gets to call themselves champion. :thumb:

Would Duke have played Man against UK the way they did against WVU.

 

I'd like UK's chances against any team not in the NBA that tried to play Man to Man D against them.

Hate to say it but UK got outcoached in that game. Why they didnt pound the ball inside all night long I will never know. Why they shot so many 3pters after they missed their first 18 I will never know.

 

Duke is better coached and didnt fall for the same crap that the Cats fell for in their game. Duke was better prepared IMO and they guarded the perimeter and attacked the paint against WV. Singler/Sheyer/Big Z all had nice points in and around the paint. Duke also shot well from the perimeter so that also comes into play.

 

I just was not impressed with WV last night at all and I honestly think it was a FLUKE that they beat UK. That is the way it goes though, you have to have some luck to advance in the tourney.

No, WV was lazy on getting through screens and gave up many open shots. They simply did not play good enough defense to cut into the lead. Each time they would score to cut it to 7 they would let Duke have a wide open look on the other end. Huggs was extremely frustrated by this, you could just tell.

UK beat themselves as much as anything. WVU played a good game but when you miss 13 or so FT, and almost 30 3pts and still only lose by 7 you beat yourself. UK had a ton of open looks at the 3 but just couldn't hit water if they feel out of boat.

Nope, that night WVU was better than the Cats. Last night the Dukies had the better team.

WVU was better than UK that night... There's no fluke to it. They executed their game plan, UK didn't. WVU made shots, UK didn't. Kinda disrespectful to WVU to call it a fluke. JMO.
