I was shocked to realize the high school I graduated from provided day care when we moved back to NKY. If you look at the big picture though, the Mom is finishing her HS education and hopefully will either go to college or be able to compete for a better paying job. Education is very important. The article did not mention the young men who were the Dad's of the babies. Basically, child care falls on the young women and their families (sad but true).

Yes, Holmes has a day care as does Kenton and Campbell counties. Newport is also adding a day care center.

Doesn't a daycare allow you to educate at an even earlier age?

 

Isn't it possible that a student who would otherwise be absent may be able to attend classes because they can have their child at school too?

I don't mind if the daycare center also provides services for school employees.

Having a need for a school daycare is a sad indictment of the current times, but hopfully the mom will graduate and be in a position to do better for her child. I was opposed to our daycare, but since have supported it. The teachers are also allowed to use it for their young ones.

It would be interesting for the schools that have daycare to check and see if this program has actually helped these young mothers and made their lives better after graduation.

If it helps a student graduate from high school that normally wouldn't, I'm all for it.

My thoughts exactly, I don't think kids are having more sex these days than in the past. And I definately do not think that kids will have sex more knowing that there are daycare services available.

 

We can approach the issue like we did in the past and pretend that it doesn't happen, or take the approach that it happened and this is what we are going to do about it. Schools are about improving our children. If a teen mother has to drop out of high school because she cannot afford care for her child that is two lives seriously affected. If she can stay in school, get a diploma and work her way toward's bettering herself she can hopefully make a better life for both she and her baby.

 

I also think that fathers of children should have responsibility of the kids. I worked in a school that had a daycare facility and the mothers really had to take responsibility for their kids. We are teaching our kids in schools a number of things. Not every kid will take the same path, we have to prepare our children for life. Some kid's lives take different turns. I am in favor of day cares in schools where there is a large number of teen mothers.

There are several things that are a sad indictment of the current times.

 

Police officers in schools

Police officers/monitors on buses

Metal detectors at the doors

Over one-third of kids eligible for free lunch

The elimination of corporal punishment

Teaching in closets because of overcrowding

The wife and I attended the SK/Holmes game on Friday night and were discussing the daycare issue. Then I open the paper on Saturday and it's front page news. That was a strange coincidence.

Can someone link the article from yesterday's paper? I can't find it on nky.com.

I agree with those who say if it helps mom graduate and stay off welfare, I am for it.

 

I DO however get tired of schools being expected to fix everything. They serve breakfast to those who wont get it at home, they are supposed to "fix" childhood obesity by offering gym and healthier foods, they cant let anyone fail....etc. etc. etc. Now they have to babysit for students, all the while dealing with funding cuts.

 

In my day we went to school to learn. Period. The rest our responsibility or the responsibility of our parents.
