I agree with those who say if it helps mom graduate and stay off welfare, I am for it.

 

I DO however get tired of schools being expected to fix everything. They serve breakfast to those who wont get it at home, they are supposed to "fix" childhood obesity by offering gym and healthier foods, they cant let anyone fail....etc. etc. etc. Now they have to babysit for students, all the while dealing with funding cuts.

 

In my day we went to school to learn. Period. The rest our responsibility or the responsibility of our parents.

The way I look at it the taxpayers will end up paying more if the mother has to drop out of school, so I have no problem with schools providing daycare. I just hope it doesn't come at the expense of providing enough teachers for the students.

I agree. Education funding in KY is one of our biggest challenges.

I have trouble believing that a 16 yr old girl is going to make the decision to have premarital sex based on the fact that there is a daycare available for her. I also don't believe that most 16 yr old girls go into sex thinking that they are going to become pregnant.

A day care would be great for schools if they had a high number of teen-aged kids getting pregnant. I don't think it is condoning, teen aged unprotected sex, but I think it would be nice to have a way to help the kids that need it. There isn't much that could be worse than a young kid having a child, and then not being able to take proper care of that kid.

No, if you read my post I said I was FOR it if it kept them off welfare.

Just frustrated it always has to be the schools responsibility to fix everything.

Are there not avenues where teenage mothers can still attain their GED without offering daycares in the school systems? Seems the money could just as easily spent on those particular programs. Personally, I'm not for it, especially if there are other options for these teenagers to finish. We have devolved into a place where everything is acceptable and there are no longer standards anywhere. I'm quite sure that mine is not the popular concensus.

What does getting a GED entail? Do you have to go take classes first?

I would think one argument FOR day care in the schools is that kids are more likely to graduate if they actually attend school. The GED option is an interesting proposition. However, it still involves classroom time. Or at least it did when my dad got his, and that was only about 15 years ago. That classroom time at non-regular school times may impede a girl who has no support system.

My concern is that a girl who has no support system likely will struggle away from school with regards to childcare as well. My guess is that she'd likely dropout regardless of the Daycare opportunity without any support from home or an outside source.

So you don't think we get a return on investment? We as taxpayers aren't getting something out of it?
