I love John Wall, but he needs to turn the ball over less if he wants to be the monster he's made out to be.

 

In 19 games this season, he has had more turnovers than assists on 4 occasions... And he has had as many turnovers as assists on 9 occasions (this includes the 4 I mentioned before). On the season, he has 126 assists and 75 turnovers.

 

He had 4 yesterday -- felt like more -- and some were at very inopportune times.

 

I'm not complaining about him, and I shutter to think about where UK could be this year without him. I just think there is this national perception around that he is flawless, and it's just not the case.

After thinking about the game more and looking at the stats, I believe there is one key reason that UK lost and it will cost them a national title if they don't get it fixed - discipline/execution of half court offense. Their half court offense has been their biggest problem all year and it cost them last night. Downey and USC shot horribly so the UK defense did its job for the most part. But UK's half court offense was probably worse than USC's. They are careless passing the ball, often almost lackadaisical, and turn it over too much. As others have mentioned, their #3 players has been very inconsistent. USC had a great game plan taking away the transition offense for UK and UK could not execute in the half court. Half court offense is UK's achilles heel right now. It cost them the game against USC. They need to get this fixed if they want to win a title.

And one of the 4 from yesterday was not his fault, but rather Ramon's fault for throwing him the ball in a bad position. I hear what you are saying though. Through his playing career in high school and AAU, he and Bledsoe could get by on ability alone, that is not the case any longer. Part of the learning curve.

USC's idea of not letting long outlets and having someone there to slow down Wall on misses was huge too. They played harder and deserved the win. Great effort from the coaches on down.

I liked that SC actually played man-to-man. UK has seen zone so often the last few weeks that they looked like they could never get in their groove.

I know people will say I'm crazy but UK did a pretty decent job guarding DD. 30 points on 29 shots is very average. What makes him a great player is the shots he hit near the end.

 

I agree. He shot 31%. But, the big shots down the stretch were huge, and very difficult. He's fun to watch.

 

Let's hope this is what UK needed, because nothing else was going to teach them that they have to come focused and ready to play for 40 minutes every game.

 

They looked unmotivated, unfocused and very nonchalant for much of the game. When they tried to crank it up in the last 3-4 minutes, Downey hit enough tough shots to finish the game. Cousins is the only guy who showed up ready to play, IMO. The rebounding is inexcusable. Wall finished with decent numbers, but I was disappointed in his game.

 

Its frustrating to watch UK lose, especially when they're 25 points better than their opponent. And, its hard to say I'm glad they lost, but they need a wake-up call. I'd rather get it now.

 

Oh well...we knew this was coming sooner or later. Let's see how they respond. If they shrug it off and keep the status quo, then we're in trouble. But, if they get the hint and start showing up to play for 40 minutes, look out. :popcorn:

Like I have said before, I love to watch him play, but not against my Cats.

Also, I remember some very good Kentucky teams that struggled against South Carolina each game.

 

Despite the loss, I still feel pretty good about this team and our chances. Nothing has changed, except the pressure of perfection has been taken off of their shoulders.
