January 27, 201016 yr He missed a lot of shots, but was the heart and soul of a far inferior team knocking off #1. This wasn't K State beating Texas or UT beating Kansas. Who made it happen if Downey was average? I'd love to see how many of his missed shots resulted in 2nd chance points... I agree he was the heart and soul of that team and he made some big plays but overall he had a pretty average game. They won't win to many games where he takes 29 shots and only gets 30 points. He is a heck of a player there is no doubt about that. It would be interesting to see how many 2nd chance points they got from him. He drove the lane and drew another defender which left rebounding lanes open all night, hence the 20 offensive rebounds.

January 27, 201016 yr 9 of 29...:confused: I am saying if you leave him open he will drain it. Every time they left him open for a 3, he nailed it. The 9 of 29 is USC's offensive strategy tonight - drive it and throw it up. If it goes great. If it doesn't, send the bigs to the rim for the follow. With more talent around him where he doesn't have to force up all those crazy shots, his shooting stats will be very different.

January 27, 201016 yr I love Patterson down low when he creates and uses his big man moves. We haven't seen much of that lately and I wish they would let him create down there more. Anytime they put it down low it's all about Cousins, which is great, but I wish PPat would be utilized as a big man more instead of shooting jump shots.

The issue was UK didn't make him pay for missing a lot of shots, and instead rewarded USC by not boxing out at all. It was far from Downey's best game in the numbers, but will likely be remembered for the rest of his life in SC because they needed him to be the man, and as a team they got it done...
January 27, 201016 yr Downey makes bad and difficult shots. He took it to our guys when it mattered. If he was playing with 4 other pros he wouldnt take all of those shots. The guy is a gamer give credit where it is due.

Being a good shooter means you can shoot when you are being guarded...not just when you are open.

January 27, 201016 yr I thought USC scouted UK well then again its not that hard. They expected Wall and Bledsoe to hit the rim often and took a lot of those easy layups away. Cousins kept UK alive in this game and prevented a double digit loss. Somehow UK could not get Patterson involved and had little success from 3 point land.
