You are not seeing it much and I think that is OK because they are more of a post up team. I think the problem is with the three spot, and the lack of consistent production they are getting from that spot. It was either the first or second possession, and they started into it and Miller got the pass and he tip-toed to the elbow instead of driving hard into the defense.

Ole Miss is much more athletic than SC. Terrico Smith? Better be ready to hit the glass.

 

I know people will say I'm crazy but UK did a pretty decent job guarding DD. 30 points on 29 shots is very average. What makes him a great player is the shots he hit near the end.

I thought they did a pretty good job, but were just awful going after his misses. Downey airballs a three and they dont get the rebound and get ball back with 2 seconds on shot clock, and Downey gets a hoop and one.

 

I guess UK did need a loss. UK should be 20 points better than SC but they did not take care of business. Alot of that has to be credited to Carolina, Downey and Coach Horn but UK should be able to beat this kind of team by a decent margin most times out. Disappointing game, but we deserve it. We as a fan base got ahead of ourselves way, way, way too much.

 

I still like our chances in March, but this is a marathon not a race. Much improvement needs to be made in the upcoming weeks IMO.

They are freshman, so I can see these types of games from them, but Patrick Patterson was not a factor. If you want shots, go get a rebound.

 

Put PP on the Block and feed him in the 2nd half.

 

 

GT you are correct as usual Coach Cal is doing a lot of different stuff but it looks bad sometimes. At this point UK wants NOTHING to do with The 'Cuse matchup 2-3 or any other team that has a zone D...........

They had no answer for Cousins in the post, and he was scoring,why feed Patterson?

All they needed was a two. That is simply knowing time and score or lack thereof. Way too much time left to be jacking threes.

 

I think this makes UK better and I think Cal will fix what is fixable.......brings the Frosh. down a notch or 2 and shows them they have to come to play and take games on the road.

Possible. They made some freshman mistakes. They fouled late when they didn't need to. Turned it over carelessly. Didnt rebound enough. Missed a few layups. If you are not sharp on the road in conference play you will get beat.

I agree. He has to take those shots on that team. Basically, like Dykes commented in the game - he throws it up and hopes for the offensive stick back if it doesn't go. Tonight that strategy worked to perfection.

Agreed on all points. UK is too good at the 4 and 5 and too weak at the 3 to run the DDM very often...

Miller shows up when we blow a team out and very rarely in big games. At some point we have to realize that isn't just a coincidence.

I wonder who Coach Cal was talking about at halftime other than Miller and Patterson about being timid to take the shot.

Downey played out of his mind, but he was 9 for 29...not that impressive really! He hit some crazy shots and we over guarded him all night...

He hit a bunch of slop shots tonight to go with a lot of great shots. Darn lucky they went in. Throw up a wild and crazy shot and hope like heck it goes in. Tonight they did.

100% correct. The 3 has really been a weakness this year and it showed up tonight.

He is right though.

 

UK did a good job guarding him especially when you think about four or five of those nine being crazy hard shots.

 

Downey is amazing, but UK lost for other reasons than not being able to guard him tonight.

I don't know why everyone is going ga ga over Downy tonight. He hit a few crazy shots down the stretch but other than that he didn't have a very good game. I'm not saying he isn't a great player because he is all that and more at times.

A few thoughts I have:

1. Best thing that could happen to this team. They got outhustled for the most part especially on the boards. Feet not moving on D and hands not up often. Lazy things that can be broken.

2. Should have gotten the ball to Cousins more especially around the 10 min mark. Big guys for SC in foul trouble and had no answer to him. This would have helped on the boards too.

3. Next time they play Air Jordan especially without a great supporting cast...man him up and zone behind it. Box in 1! Stop the three then have to shoot over Orton/Cousins in position is not an easy task!

 

Dodson and Bledsoe missed to big dunks too that killed momentum. Live and learn. It's fun watching KY again. I was not happy with the hustle of most but this should be a huge building block for Cal. I have faith in them that they will grow from this. Patterson not attacking needs to be fixed too.

 

I am happy for former Tates Creek grad and SC coach D. Horn. Great win for him again!

I would love it if Coach Cal gets on Patterson about playing harder. I mean, if he showed the effort he did pulling down those two boards, this might be a different game. it was like he was hiding out there. And I like Patterson just as much as the next guy.
