Which one usually wins the fight a high or the low. When it comes to who pushes who?

 

Depends on a lot of factors. Hence, many times the weather is not easy to predict.

 

I usually look at the isobars and pressure readings around the H or L. The distance between the bars that are close together indicate stronger winds and smaller areas of equal pressure. If the bars are farther apart then the pressure differential is smaller and the winds are calmer. The direction of the bars also indicates how the winds are moving. Standard pressure is 1013.2 millibars. So the higher the number goes associated with the isobars, the stronger the high pressure. Vice versa for the lower pressure.

In the current case, the huge ridge of high pressure predicted to be centered over Iowa late Thursday evening with pressure up to 1024 many 100s of miles out from that center is stronger than the 1008 low pressure over Texas that is driving the storm. Unless the low really picks up steam from the gulf of Mexico (which is a possibility) it does not appear that it will be stronger than the high. That will keep the front of the low pressure system from pushing its track north of the ohio river until it is further east than Lexington. South Central KY may get the most snow, but I still think it will be far less than the 8-10 inches predicted.

 

Just my estimate in a nutshell.

 

A winter storm watch has just been issued for most of Kentucky south of I-64. It goes into effect at 7am Friday through 7am Saturday.

If any one is interested there is one hotel room available for the All A tournament. Let me know as quickly as possible.

 

I don't plan on staying down there until Friday night so they say some will open up when the first round losers go back home.

So, in other words, God is saying he doesn't like the All A tournament in Richmond and it needs to be moved. As quickly as possible!

Some of the latest weather models are showing southern and southeastern Kentucky in the storm's bullseye. It looks like that part of the state could get as much as 10 or more inches of snow.

Going to be really close. The L is really picking up a ton of moisture from the gulf. It may grow in strength enough to push the H that is dropping out of Canada further north. By 4pm today should be able to make a pretty good call on it as it will have moved far enough east. I just hope for the sake of everyone in southern KY that the high pressure does drop far enough south to get colder temps and this is a snow event and not an ice/freezing rain event like last year.

The weather channel in particular is saying 1-2 inches during Friday, and 5-8 that night. So in all, we could end up with about 10 inches here in McCreary County.

Our schools are already called off.

My inlaws on the other hand in Jonesville, VA are looking to get around 12-15 inches!

Chris Baily's latest weather blog has my area, Owsley County, getting 10+ inches of snow. I just hope the snow is dry enough to not weight the tree branches down and cause an electrical outage. The heavy, wet snow is what causes the most problems.
