There were going for the scoring record in the 170-35 game. I don't agree with it, but I can at least see the argument of wanting to make history with the team.

 

This game, there were no records on the line, they were just doing something very crazy.

The sun don't shine on the same dog's tailend all the time, I am sure that at some point this behavior by the coach will come back to haunt him. I am not sure that if I had a player who was big enough and strong enough I wouldn't have him "make a statement" Now I know that is bad sportsmanship, but some times you have to fight fire with fire.

 

 

You would think that, at some point, he may be the coach on the other end of the thrashing, but I guarantee you that this coach is the type of person that will quit, as soon as the talent is gone.

I have been on both ends of blowouts, and have felt bad on both sides but this score makes me physically ill....and I had a good dinner, hope I don't lose it.

Here's the scoop according to Chron.com (Houston Chronicle)...

 

Yates led 49-6 after the first quarter; starters played about 18-19 minutes on average

 

Yates utilized full court press for the entire 32 minutes.

I feel like they're trying to prove entirely too much. We get it, you're the #1 team in the nation...congrats. Take off the press but still play hard.

So why would teams continue to schedule games with this team and be humiliated? Seems to me that if no schools scheduled with them to play....then, that solves the problem.

 

If I knew my team was going to lose by 50 points or more and that this is how Yates was going to play, I would cancel the game.

The Yates coach has no class at all.

You pose an excellent question. I believe there is a little difference, but neither situation should be strived for during a blowout. The problem with this is what do we consider a blowout?

 

I had a JV official decide he would teach me a lesson pressing up 20 points. I had 15 players dressed, this was the style of game that could get them minutes and it was in the first half when he took over. I havent mentioned that their team was undefeated and playing at home. I held to my guns and we lost with 8 players fouling out, and 7 with 3 or more. He clearly thought I was being unsportsmanlike and was wrong. The only thing he accomplished was confusing my young players on how to attempt to play defense.

 

I have been on both sides of this argument over and over again. Their are too many variables to assign absolute rules. Sometimes the winning coach subs and the other coach presses his JV and embarasses them. By all means put the starters back in and run it up. Just one example that could be chosen from dozens.

 

In the situations described here. IMO, intolerable display of poor sportsmanship from the coach.

I think Columbus Northland might have something to say about that. They've beaten both Findlay Prep and Oak Hill Academy and are currently ranked #1 in the country.

 

I have a feeling teams are going to start cancelling games with Yates because of this poor show of sportsmanship.

 

It's too bad that Yates isn't allowed to play in that end of the year National High School Invitation that brings in, I think, 8 of the top teams in the country to compete for a "mythical" high school national championship.

“No, I don’t think they tried to run up the scoreboard on us,” William Jeffery said. “Yates is a very good team. I joke all the time that they could beat the New York Knicks right now. My players played to the best of their abilities out there and represented the Davis name on their chests and that’s all I can ask for.”

I think he's giving a politically correct answer. If you are pressing full court with a 100-point lead, I have to think you're trying to run up the scoreboard.

If I had a vote I wouldn't put them in the top 25. If I were a parent at the school I'd want the coach gone. If I were a parent at an opposing school I hope I wouldn't try to meet the coach in the parking lot.
