I agree with this completely. Would an owner really not hire a minority if they felt he was the best candidate for the job? I don't think so. Owners want to win and there's only one color they're worried about, Green.

I feel like this sometimes, too. But PurplePride's post has really provided some insight into a situation that, quite frankly, we don't relate to that well.

 

My problem lies with affirmative action and the racial undertones that it immediately brings.

 

It is still my company and my choice. College is open to anyone. It's the people who have to apply, get in and do the work.

How does his opinion violate equal opportunity? submit a resume and if your the best you get hired. I don't think he every said that he wouldn't hire minorities, just shouldn't be forced to interview somebody just to go through the motions if that isn't who you are interested in.

It's pretty simple to me. If I am the owner I am hiring the best person for the job, race is a non issue to me and I think it is to smart business men. All these guys have been good business men for a long time to get to where they are and that is by making good decisions no matter what the color of someones skin is. This rule is stupid and makes an issue out of something that is not even an issue IMO.

One of the biggest reasons why the Rooney Rule works in the NFL is that it allows opportunity for folks that simply was not present.

 

Hire whom you wish, but as PP said, if a minority candidate does a great job in an interview then the word gets out that this guy is a quality candidate.

 

The biggest aide in getting hired as a coach, at any level, is being connected. The old boy network of football coaches never allowed this. That is why we saw the recycling of coaches for decades. The Rooney Rule allows for folks to break into the circle, get their name at the forefront and get an opportunity. Everyone that gets the interview is qualified; it isn't like they are pulling in the first minority they see off of the street. These are ex-players, long time coaches, successful coordinators and people that deserve a shot.

 

Again, owners can hire whom they wish. If an owner really feels like putting in a little extra work to find the best guys is a detriment, then they are probably not that successful as an owner anyway.

Why are we ignoring the 800-pound gorilla in the room? The NFL recognized one simple fact: that its ownership is almost exclusively old white men. Old white men from a "different era;" a term that has been used ad infinitum to excuse the words and actions of people such as Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond, among other lowlights.

 

Are all the NFL owners racist? Of course not. But the NFL probably felt at least a few of them were, and as a result were highly unlikely to even give blacks the opportunity to interview for a job with them, let alone hire them, without something such as the Rooney rule.

 

Is it really that difficult to imagine that a few of those owners -- most of whom come from "a different era" -- would hang on to antiquated beliefs, taught to them by their parents, and therefore view blacks with skepticism when it comes to their capability to perform management jobs?

 

For the record, I have the same concerns about the business world in general in terms of the CEO population.

No, he's saying the Rooney Rule makes owners give minorities the opportunity to interview for the job. Not hire them, interview them. That's all the rule does.

 

I think some of you are missing the whole point about this rule. Jim Schue had a great post about "the old boy network". I think people would be naive to think that those NFL owners that grew up racist aren't racist anymore. At least the Rooney Rule prevents this racism from running rampant throughout the league. The Rooney Rule isn't making NFL teams hire minorities like affirmative action does, all the Rooney Rule is saying is to interview 1 minority before you make your hire. It boggles my mind to see so many people against a rule that says to interview 1 minority before you make hire.

I know some will say, "that's not what I meant when I said I don't like the rule", but in the grand scheme of things, 1 minority has to be interviewed before the team can make a hire, but people say that's wrong.......is it really that big of a deal to interview 1 minority before you make a hire whether you are going to hire him or not?
