January 13, 201016 yr No, he's saying the Rooney Rule makes owners give minorities the opportunity to interview for the job. Not hire them, interview them. That's all the rule does. I think some of you are missing the whole point about this rule. Jim Schue had a great post about "the old boy network". I think people would be naive to think that those NFL owners that grew up racist aren't racist anymore. At least the Rooney Rule prevents this racism from running rampant throughout the league. The Rooney Rule isn't making NFL teams hire minorities like affirmative action does, all the Rooney Rule is saying is to interview 1 minority before you make your hire. It boggles my mind to see so many people against a rule that says to interview 1 minority before you make hire. Really, it bothers you that bad to "go through the motions" to interview 1 minority before you hire Pete Carroll even though we all knew you were going to hire him? Really? I know some will say, "that's not what I meant when I said I don't like the rule", but in the grand scheme of things, 1 minority has to be interviewed before the team can make a hire, but people say that's wrong.......is it really that big of a deal to interview 1 minority before you make a hire whether you are going to hire him or not? And then you wonder why I like the rule and affirmative action.:idunno: I also know black people in NFL front office positions who are offended by the rule. If someone is smart enough to hire a Mike Tomlin who turns out to make you millions that's a wise choice. If someone passes them up to hire a lame duck college version of Weis, then that's their bad business decision. People say they don't want the gov't dictating their lifes why should anyone dictate your business?

I'm assuming they're not a beneficiary of the Rooney Rule?
January 13, 201016 yr Which black people in NFL front offices are offended by the rule? I'm assuming they're not a beneficiary of the Rooney Rule? I know one guy personally. His dad coached in the NFL for over 10 years and he is a black man. He does not want anyone to waste his time if he has no shot at the job at all. Hypothetically speaking if he was a contender for a job.
January 13, 201016 yr Why are you (not you of course example) or anyone else telling me how to run my business. It's my money, my risk, my shareholders. Anyone is more than welcome to apply to my company. I will look at all resume's and call in the people I feel are most qualified. Why waste peoples time if I feel they are not qualified? You don't have to hire them, ... all the rule does is open up an opportunity for minority candidates that honestly, weren't really out there before the rule was put into place.

The point is that he has the opportunity, partly due to his success, partly due to the Rooney Rule, and partly due to other factors which may vary from team to team. I find it hard to believe that anyone would turn down an interview for a job that they really wanted. Also, "people" means more than one.
January 13, 201016 yr Dumb rule. Interview me for a job based on my past performances, not because of the color of my skin.... I could go on a HUGE rant about this but I'll save it for another time.
January 13, 201016 yr The rule is stupid and offensive to qualified minorities. My previous statement was made to make the point of how dumb this process is. I think the percentage of American that is black is less than 20%, I think the percentage of coaches in the NFL is close to or more than that and I can assure you that the percentage of millionaire players is much higher than 20% It isn't the 60's and just in case the NFL missed it the President of our country is a minority and he wouldn't be so if a good number of old white people didn't vote for him.

And what does he win Bob!? Yet we still need cosmetic rules.

This is irrelevent...the more relevent stat is to look at the population of NFL players, if this is where you want to go. There is no logical reason why the coaching population doesn't more accurately reflect the player population in terms of race. I just don't think that point is relevent, at all.
January 13, 201016 yr I know it is a different level of football, but the Lane Kiffin stuff is exactly why you need a Rooney rule in college as well as the NFL. What, exactly, has this guy done to deserve the jobs he has had and the opportunities he has received to be a head coach? Yet, Ruffin McNeal is out of work and Norm Chow couldn't get a head job. I guess this makes sense to some, but I think that there has to be a rule in place to allow the circle to be penetrated and allow everyone to at least get an opportunity to interview.
January 14, 201016 yr Why do we have to label anything? Currently with 6 out of 32 coaches we are at 18.75% black coaches. And that # is sure to rise in the next 10 years. Let an owner hire who they want and don't make them interview people they don't want to. Its disingenuous to the coach as well, wouldn't it be nice to know a team wants to interview you because you are a legit candidate and not because he has to on a rule. My biggest problem with all of this is it's 2010, not 1960, 70, 80, 90.

If Dan Rooney, someone with a lot more intimate knowledge of the mindset of owners and the workings of the hiring and interview process and understanding of league offices than any of us posters, thinks this rule was and is necessary then I am willing to say that ownership is not as open-minded as we may want to believe they are and need this rule to ensure that all qualified peoples are guarenteed and opportunity to break into the head coaching circle and ranks. I appreciate your opinion and I wish that all folks were color-blind and all people were hired based on merit, but even in 2010 this is unfortunately not the case.

Did Chow turn down the UK job before Brooks got it? For some reason that popped into my head.

January 14, 201016 yr Did Chow turn down the UK job before Brooks got it? For some reason that popped into my head. I'm not sure, but I do remember hearing that Doug Williams was interested and he never got intereviewed. Of course, we have Joker and had Tubby so I don't know that I can harbor any ill will toward my alma mater. Regardless of what UK has done (wheteher or not they offered Chow or truely rejected Williams), that does not negate the fact that only 14 of the 120 coaches in the FBS are African American and that the interviewing processes could, maybe, use a Rooney Rule to ensure that candidates of color that are qualified at least get an opportunity to interview for head coaching positions.
