Yes and no. I hear you, but it also gets their name in the door for other jobs. All these teams are in bed with one another, so the person who interviewed for the Cardinals job builds a rep. Maybe the GM of the Cardinals says, "you know, we never really considered this guy until the mandatory interview, but he would do a heck of a job..."

 

To me the bigger problem is not having minorities in the management roles of organizations.

Name a black coach who has been hired since the Rooney Rule that was 'the mandatory black guy' and name the 'mandatory black guys' that interviewed under false pretenses.

 

I'll also add, you're missing the whole point of the Rooney Rule and what it really does and that is give qualified black coaches an opportunity to learn the interview process. Whether they get the job or not they learn the process that they likely otherwise wouldn't have gotten a chance to experience as the NFL coaching carousel and recycled coaches keeps going round and round.

The majority of NFL owners are very old, very rich, very white men. Men who are described in terms such as "God bless his soul. He's from a different time." And while Marge Schott bucked one of those trends, the concept of "My Million-Dollar (Negroes)" still jibes with many of these guys.

 

Of the 31 NFL owners (Community-owned Pack is eliminated from the discussion), there are some interesting age trends:

 

Two are 90 or older. Three if you count Virginia McCaskey of the Bears, who turns 90 on Saturday. She's the only chick of the group.

 

Six are 80-89, not counting Mrs. McCaskey.

 

Eight are 70-79, with the median trending in the mid-70s, a great age for fondly remembering when black folks "knew their place."

 

Seven are in the 60-69 range, and they might also have those type of memories, especially if they came from wealthy families whose households required low-cost, subservient hired help, which most did.

 

Five are in the 50-59 range. Two are in their 40s, while one -- the 49ers owner -- is in their 30s.

I'm not missing any point. Would you show up to a job interview when you know going in, the only reason you're there is so they can check a box on the hiring checklist before they hire the person they really want? I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

Doesn't matter. If there are old owners that still feel that way, the rule only requires that you interview blacks, not hire them. When a black coach is hired, it's because they were qualified and the owner believed in them.

So you wouldn't go to the interview with the mindset to win them over and get the job? You'd just give up? Is that correct?

IMO, if you do something to or for someone based on race it is a form of racism. Plain and simple.

But this is a different situation than just a regular job. Because of the Rooney Rule qualified black applicants are getting an opportunity to interview and go through the process that they might not otherwise have gotten. You don't understand the mentality of a black man so I wouldn't expect you to understand why the Rooney Rule is an important rule and a rule endorsed by a majority of black coaches.

I'm for the rule since it gives a coach a chance to come in and dazzle someone where he wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise. I do wonder how many, if any, black coaches have been hired because of this rule.

I bet over 50% hired since the Rooney Rule were hired as a direct result of the rule.
