December 18, 200916 yr And those are two things you can't say about Calipari. I wouldn't be shocked if UK had as many as 6 players on their team right now that don't graduate. It's a different game than when Knight coached.
December 18, 200916 yr He's a tough old school coach. But there are two things you can't say about Bob Knight: 1. He has never been forced to forfeit a final four 2. His players graduate And those are two things you can't say about Calipari. I wouldn't be shocked if UK had as many as 6 players on their team right now that don't graduate. Wall and Cousins will both leave school early. Who else do you feel won't graduate?
December 18, 200916 yr That is stretching it there, and there isn't any room for that unless something substantial comes out about anything involving it - if it even happens. If history tell us anything...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at Memphis didnt like 20 out of the last 22 seniors to come through there graduate? Thats pretty good in this day and time.
December 18, 200916 yr It's so nice to be relevant again! Good point. If UK were 6-4, or even 7-3 Knight probably wouldn't have even mentioned anything about Cal or Kentucky.
December 18, 200916 yr It's a different game than when Knight coached. Bobby Knight would tell you it is not a different game, really. Score is kept by the number of times you put the round ball through the hoop. There really aren't a lot of different ways to do it.
December 18, 200916 yr That is stretching it there, and there isn't any room for that unless something substantial comes out about anything involving it - if it even happens. It's got to be comforting to know that if something "substantial" does come out about this outstanding recruiting class, that it's good, upstanding, mature kids like DeMarcus Cousins, that don't like attention, we are talking about.

What has DeMarcus Cousins ever done? So he gets upset at times on the basketball court. Does that mean he's not a good, upstanding young man? How mature is it to get on a message board and blast a 18 year kid? :sssh:

There really aren't a lot of different ways to do it. No he wouldn't. He would tell you how much the nature of college basketball has changed. How the kids in today's game have changed. If the game hadn't passed by the old man he would still be coaching.

His players graduate And those are two things you can't say about Calipari. I wouldn't be shocked if UK had as many as 6 players on their team right now that don't graduate. FACT: Calipari drastically improved the graduation rate at Memphis. And I have a problem with players that leave early for the NBA being part of that equation, but outside of Wall and Cousins, I am not sure of any other kids at UK right now may not graduate. FACT: His last 2 schools did have to forfeit their final 4 appearances. Can't argue with that. BUT, do we have to keep volleying back and forth that it happened but the NCAA never found anything to indicate that Calipari knew about this? Or that the Clearinghouse ruled a player eligible then AFTER the fact, asked that player to prove that they had indeed taken the SAT. They couldn't prove he didn't, but required him to provide more evidence that he did. FACT: Knight was a GREAT coach. However, he also wasn't getting top notch NBA level talent, especially the last 10 years of his career. If they don't leave early for the NBA, then the odds of them graduating are MUCH higher. How many of his ex players or assistants who have gone on to have great success is he still on good terms with (Coach K, Steve Alford, Mike Davis, Isaiah Thomas, ... )? HE had to be the main attraction. IMHO, Cal likes the spotlight as well, but what they do in the spotlight is totally different. Hall put it best that a friendship with Knight 'depends on whether he is beating you or not.'
December 18, 200916 yr You want your son put in a sleeper hold so his coach can be in the limelight? Okay... You didn't say his coach was sleeping with students, partying with students, having outside sources (boosters) give gifts or money to recruits, doing drugs or offering drugs to the players.... Personally I think there are worse things than a little discipline. You can color it any way you want, I know times have changed. But do you honestly think the old-timers didn't take their belts off sometimes and whip players at halftime for a poor performance? No way you could do this stuff today, it would be on YouTube before the team took the court for the second half. The game has passed Bobby Knight by, I agree, but he ran a good, clean program at IU and TTU. His track record speaks for itself. He managed to win Nat'l Titles in '81 and '87 when he didn't have the most talented team in the field. Sure, they were upset several times, but I think all in all his teams overacheived because he got the most out of what he had. At times he was probably his own worst enemy because players had to be mentally tougher to play for him.
