Greatest "What IF" Teams

Featured Replies

Rick had let Derrick Anderson play against Arizona.
Anderson couldn't have played. I know they said he could run and dunk, but he had no lateral movement. The possibility of him playing was a smokescreen.

But yes, his injury may very well have cost UK a national title. Of course, if Pitino hadn't redshirted Jeff Sheppard ...

Any team that would have been lucky enough to have LeBron or Kobe if the one year rule had been in place.

Chris Webber and the Fab Five had stuck it out for another two years... two more trips to the championship game?

Two more banners would have come down:cool:

Seeing the other thread about "what if" Meeks had stayed got me to thinking.

What would some of the greatest "what if" teams be in College Basketball history? There are a lot of them from UNC to UK that would have been unbelieveable basketball teams if "this player" had not left for the draft or "this player" had not been injured.

Who are some you can think of?

This year's UK team with Jodie Meeks has been mentioned.

But I immediately remember the '97 team. What if Antoine Walker stays one more year and Derek Anderson is not injured? How dynamic would that squad have been?

What if the '99 team still had a Senior Nazr Mohammad who went pro after the national title?

Just wondering out loud during the stretch of a week off from UK games.

I can go back some more to the UK/Pitino days and say if he could have signed Kevin Garnett instead of him (Garnett) going pro. :scared:

We could go on and on with these but it just reminds me of the only true "What If" and that has something to do with a frog having wings. :D

Rex, Eric Manual, Chris Mills, Sean Kemp were always quite a "what if" team.

Reggie Hanson stayed and had a great sr year if memory serves me right, and Leron Ellis would have been on that team as well. That team would have been a good preseason warmup for some of the lesser NBA teams.

1983: James Worthy stays for a Senior Year and plays with sophomore Michael Jordan and a junior named Sam Perkins.

The 1994 UK example with Dent is interesting but what if Mashburn plays his Senior year on that team as well? Ford and Mashburn have another year together as an inside-outside combo.

Duke has a great big "what if?" 2000 and 2001: Brand, Avery, Magette all stay for their final 2 years?

Thad Matta had gotten Miles out of the game before his 5th foul against Duke in the Elite 8 in Atlanta as Miles was the best player on the floor at the time.

John Pelphry played defense agasint Christian freakin Laettner.

What if LBJ had gone to college - any college?

What if the 1984 UK team had shot just 30% from the field in the 2nd half against Georgetown.

Ooohhh, that's a good one.

What if nobody left early from Duke's 1999 Runner UP season? The next year you would've had William Avery, Corey Maggette, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Mike Dunleavy......that's a pretty good roster, IMO...
