They've lost credibility because they've gotten smoked in their BCS games. It has nothing to do with a lack of a conference. What purpose would being in a conference serve them? Without a conference, they're able to play all over the US, which is huge for recruiting as they're not locked into 7 games within their conference (region). They don't have to deal with any bowl revenue sharing amongst the conference. They get to pocket all the money. They have a national television deal with NBC for all their home games, which they wouldn't get with a conference. Plus, all their away games are covered by ABC or ESPN, again, something that won't happen with a conference. They still have a huge national following, which helps with the voters, because they will bring in the money for the bowl games (because we all know the bowls are about generating the most revenue). I cannot see one positive thing about joining a conference.

 

If you're at Notre Dame the only thing you're playing for is a chance to go to a bowl. Other teams play to win the division in there conference or there conference championship and then get rewarded with a bowl. If I'm the coach, I like my chances when I'm from the SEC or Big Ten and I just followed the coaches at Notre Dame into a young mans living room. I'll take those odds with that recruit everyday.

Speaking of recruits...what are the chances some of Kelly's current recruits follow him to ND if he does indeed leave?

 

How would BK leaving affect say Austin Collinsworth or Miles Simpson? Any chance they receive an offer from BK if he goes to ND since they already have offers to UC?

All this talk about academic standards hurting Notre Dame is way off base. Sure their are some players that the Irish must back off from because they would not be able to get into school, but for the most part the majority of the top recruits would be able to get into Notre Dame.

 

The Irish skill players on offense were rated as good or better than just about any other school. Weis's game management, play calling etc, set these guys back as much as anything.

 

IMO, the biggest problem Weis had with his roster was on the defensive side. Way too many recruiting battles were lost over the last couple of years. Look at who Notre Dame had offered and some of the guys that they came down to the wire with who are now starting for other programs. Notre Dame didn't lose those players due to academic stardards they just choose other schools.

 

The academic excuse is simply not valid in my mind. There are plenty of top athletes available who can get into Notre Dame, they simply haven't wanted to come to South Bend.

 

I didn't come away from ND games this season with the feeling that they were lacking offensively. :idunno:

 

But, I'm not going to defend Weis. With the schedule they had, and the way they finished this season, at this point in his tenure, a change was justified. I think ND handled this one correctly...I think letting him coach this season was the right move, and in light of the result, I think moving on to a new coach is the right move.

Here's the problem, how many kids care about playing all over the country when the recruits that ND needs can go to USC, Florida, Texas...etc., and still play all over the country?

 

Another thing, when Urban Meyer walks in and says they've won however many SEC titles, and shows him the rings, it means a lot more than "It's Notre Dame". That doesn't mean squat anymore. Heck, OSU has been trounced in their BCS games but it still looks better because Tressel can show off those Big Ten Championships. Fact of the matter is, ND has NOTHING to get these kids to South Bend to play football. (Keeping in mind that most kids they need to compete for a national title don't give a crap about their academics.)

 

Lastly, a recruit doesn't care about the TV deal or not having to share revenues. They want trophies and rings. Everyone is on TV every week now and they don't see a dime of the bowl revenues.

 

Nothing? They can say you will play on National TV every week. You will play in Yankee Stadium, the Jets Stadium, Orlando, The Super Dome, and Dublin, Ireland. I think that would interest me. Along with knowing that every game I play will be on NBC, ABC, or ESPN. ND doesn't have "NOTHING" to offer...

He is in NYC for a national coaches function, and even though Swarbrick is there, there is no formal interview that will take place while he is in NYC. His account wasn't hacked, and he was just asking for suggestions on where to eat lunch...
