Not sure UC is a better setup. UC loses vs. Pitt and they are out of the BCS games. NOtre Dame would have lost that game and they are still in a BCS game.

 

I just think it's a recipe to get fired anymore and UC would give him a lifetime contract and honor it at this point. I don't know hope BK stays the grass is not always greener and South Bend is boring. He has what he wants a BCS program already.

Great hire for ND. I don't see how this could be shocking, it's tough to keep someone of Kelly's stature at a growing program. Jones would be a great replacement for BK, and UC can continue to still win in the future.

I know its Notre Dame but this is not the job it was even 10 years ago. I think the Fighting Irish has lost alot of credibility because it doesn't play for a conference championship every year.

ND has not had a lot of on the field success recently, but that does not mean they do not have more resources and prestige than virtually every other school. To restore Notre Dame to prominence means a lot more than building a program at a school such as UC.

I pretty much agree. If money is the sole thing he's after then goodbye and I didn't want that kind of guy in town anyway. If he wants to win football games stay at UC. He's setting himself up for a Chuck Weis moment at ND.

 

I doubt money is the sole issue. I mean as we seen this year, even he doesn't lose a game at UC that still might not get a chance for a title. As someone else said if they lose to Pitt, they might not have even made a BCS bowl even with just one lost. That would not be a problem at Notre Dame, one lost you are definitely in a BCS bowl, and depending on how other teams did that year might even be good enough to get in the Title game. If he wants a chance to win titles, which is the goal of most coaches. Then Notre Dame gives him a better chance to do that if he can turn them around like he did at UC. By the way comparing him to Weis is not a good comparison. Weis had no head coaching experience. BK has head coaching experience, and has been very good at it. There is a better chance of him doing well, than it was for Weis because of experience alone. Plus there is a lot of talent there, even with Claussen and Tate leaving. Weis did bring in talent, he just obviously didn't know how to coach them up that well.

 

With all that said, I think if Texas misses that field goal. That BK would definitely be staying at UC, because it would show that he can play in a title game at UC. I think if UC was going to be in the title game, he would have definitely stayed and been there for a long time IMO. That kicker missing that kicked, hurt UC more than just having a title shot. It probably lost them their coach also.

2 out of the last 3 head coaches had no head coaching experience I dont think. I know Weis had no head coaching experience, and I don't think Davies did either. Ty Willingham just was not a good hire for a program like Notre Dame.

Then UC needs to step up and pay like the bigger opportunities.

 

I'm not faulting BK if he chooses to leave. I think it's a dream situation for him, money aside. With moderate success, they'll rename the mural Touchdown Kelly.

Okay, so UC should never hire a quality coach again? UC is a stepping stone job compared to the elite jobs, and that's how it's going to be looked at IMO for a while. Kelly has laid a solid foundation, I think people had to be kidding themselves if they thought he was going to be a lifetime guy here. Maybe if they get in the title he stays for longer, but eventually if he continued to have success a job would come open that he couldn't pass up. If UC is lucky Jones or whoever they hire next will be in the same position. It takes a while to build a program. The coach after Jones is the key to UC's overall success IMO. By that time, if things continue to go as planned and UC continues to iimprove, it could be a great job that someone could find a home at. JMO.

Weis was a head coach at a HS about 25-30 years ago for one season. Does that count?:lol:

I would think that recruiting is not as attractive for the younger kids. They don't really know about Notre Dame when Lou Holtz was there. I can see Stoops or Meyer or Saban sitting on the couch in front of the family and asking that young man, "How many conference championships does Notre Dame have?" My guess would be if you surveyed the top 100 senior and juniors in the country, they wouldn't have Notre Dame rated a top 10 program. Just my opinion...

I think that Notre Dame has been in the top 10 in recruiting for the last 3 years, maybe even top 5 I think. So even though Notre Dame hasn't done much lately, top recruits still do go there. Weis did do a good job with that, he just didn't coach them up that well I guess. BK if he goes there probably will be about to recruit really well too, and would be getting better players there than he would be able to get at UC.

It's part of a progression of moving him up the ladder. He's only been in the college game for 3 years, and is nowhere near ready to run a program. I think he spends a few years as DC and then when the next coach moves on he gets a shot to run the show...
