To this point LCA has played teams with a combined record of 40-41 with a narrow 28-27 victory over a 3-6 team. Mayfield has played teams with a 33-47 record with a victory over the current class 2A Tenn. state champ who has just 1 defeat. Beechwood has played teams that have a 41 -40 record and Beechwood has been shelled in three games. I know all these records are out the door come the playoffs but I dont see how LCA is just a clear choice for being the #1 ranked team to this point. I believe if some of the panel took a harder look them it wouldnt be that Mayfield gets just 1 vote.

I realize it's a "little" late in the game' date=' but I would have[b'] liked to have seen 1st place votes (or total points) next to the respective teams, just to know how close the vote really is[/b]. ...And although most like the BluegrassPreps.com poll (including myself) over the Associated Press poll, it is nice to know what media outlets make up the poll. There "seems" to be equal representation across the state with the AP poll, whereas most of us on this board don't really know where the .com voters reside (not specifically, but in general). I'd bet my last dollar though that there is a heavy slant towards central & northern KY voters in these polls.

 

Here's an example. Ever since LCA's loss to LexCatch a few weeks ago, the AP put Mayfield at the #1 spot. A majority of the news outlets down here in far WKY (TV, radio, newspaper) have been calling Mayfield the number 1 team in the state for several weeks. While BGP is the foremost authority on high school sports, no one knows who's casting the ballet, so they just tell everyone what the AP dishes out. I'm not trying to slight the AP, because I realize there are some (but far from all) of those voters who are also BGP members. Just my 2 cents.

Was this necessary? it just starts another debate...here we go! just about every, if not all, 1A team would have been "shelled" playing these teams...especially inexperienced teams playing their first games of the season.

One vote for Mayfield in the top slot, hmmm that's unfortunate. Well, that one vote does come from someone who has seen both teams play and that does make me feel better.

Crunch-time, you might be right but it did happen. Nobody will overlook Beechwood, I assure you. I also would bet Beechwood has gotten better as the season has moved on. Besides, what else are we going to talk about?

Not real sure if they have. The lost big in 3 games, Won big in 4 games, and beat a pretty good Bellevue team; however, the field conditions didn't allow either team to show much. I'm guessing this week will show if there's been much progress.

The number of votes in a certian slot doesn't neccesarily mean that's where they end up. AP puts together a poll that adds up votes. BGP ranks teams. There is a starting point and then discussion. There have been several times where a team moved up or down through the vote until a valid case was made to readjust their position. That's what makes the BGP Rankings more accurate IMO. Just because I rank a team #1 doesnt mean they are. That's what the finals are for.

I wish we could all quit worrying about the rankings. We shall know soon enough with the playoffs starting next week and all. Do rankings really mean anything until round 6:00 pm on December 5?

I agree with LCA at number 1. I think beechwood/Mayfield are tied at the number 2 spot.

snakesnot what is going on with some of you out west. You act like its you against the world. We live as far to the east as you can get without falling into the Ohio river. On the other side of the river is Ohio and West Virginia. That has to put us at the same advantage point. But yet I don't hear anyone from this end thinking we are getting disrespected. We live 125 miles from Lexington, 230 miles from Louisville, 125 miles from Covington. So it's not like we are in the loop. The biggest city around us is 25,000 in population. We can go to bigger cities not to far down the road. But we have to leave the state. Help us understand on this end of the state. You have in 1A a team ranked #2. And the last time I checked that is higher then #3. I think Beechwood is #3 arn't they? So is Beechwood getting more respect then Mayfield? I don't think so. Cret. Co is on your end of the state and was ranked #3 and #4 most of the year. It's Mayfield's fault that CC dropped so much. You had to go and beat them to death. :cry: Mayfield will have it's chance to prove themselves to everyone soon. If I were a betting man. I bet the Mayfield coaching staff likes being #2. And would rather not be #1 till the end of the season. It's called less pressure. And you still get as much respect. Have you herd the saying? It ain't who starts the game. It's who finishes the game. Mayfield will have it's chance to finish very soon. I think you will be in the championship game. Don't know if you will win. But I think you will be there in the end. NOW YOU SEE THAT IS RESPECT FROM SOMEONE 350 miles to your east. Be Believe me WE respect you and all of the ranked teams out west. Hey look at it this way. You can still play teams to your west without leaving the state. We can't play anyone to our east without leaving the state. We are on the state line. We are the one's backed in the corner.

You only have to search back to last year to hear that song. But I agree, Mayfield is receiving and deserving of respect.

As the season has marched on, I think Mayfield has closed the ratings gap between themselves and LCA. I consider it very close between those two as we enter the last game, but I agree with LCA at #1. If Corbin beats LCA, then I would have to think Mayfield will enter the playoffs ranked #1. If LCA beats Corbin, then they deserve #1. One fact working against Mayfield since the season started is the past couple of years. LCA has been excellent, including a state runner up with quite a few of the key players who started as sophomores on that team now being seniors. Mayfield's past couple of years have caused more of a show me attitude from those of us who haven't seen them in person. Mayfield is doing a great job of showing us how good they are and that is why they are a close #2 right now in the rankings. But you know what? Starting next week, none of this ratings stuff really matters because you get chance to prove it on the field through the playoffs. At the end of the day on December 4, no one will care who was rated what today.

I've heard tons of folks from Eastern Ky playing the "we out east dont get any respect" card, over the years. Ram, to say it's simply a West Ky thing is a joke. Matter of fact, I've heard it much more from the mountain area in Eastern Ky than any other geographic area.

 

Fact is, teams like Beechwood have earned there respect over the years because traditionally, they perform when it counts and normally, they're the most talented or at least one of the top 2in talent in there class. So, I have no issue with talking them up, because they're a proven commodity. I do think, however, that theres 2 teams out there with more talent than them this year and deserve to be ranked ahead of them based on how they've performed.

 

I will say this, Beechwood could lose all 22 starters, have 1/2 there team with season ending injuries and 3 or 4 projected other starters quit the team prior to the start of the season and I would bet a hundred dollars somehow, someway, they'd still be the BGP preseason #1 team. Is that right, I don't think it is, but, like I said, I have no problem with it. They've proven themselves. Other teams, not so much.

 

By the way, I don't think Dixie or Cov Cath would destroy every 1a team out there this year, most, yes, but, all, no....
