Scribe, have you seen Mayfield , LCA or BWood play in person ? With you being in the minority on this board, why do you have Mayfield #1 over LCA ? Not very many on this board (from what I can tell) think Mayfield can beat LCA. I also think BWood is very dangerous.

I watched Mayfield beat Trousdale County earlier in the season. In past years (even with their really good teams), a 20 point deficit would have meant lights out. Not with this team. Not only are they fast in the backfield, but if Shelton catches the slant or cross, he's gone. That's really a weapon Mayfield hasn't utilized with their backs much in the past. I've seen LCA on film and they are a very solid team. I think someone above called them 1a and 1b and that sounds about right. I want to see what Beechwood does this week with NCC before making them a 1c

In the playoff bracket, LCA is one side and Beechwood and Mayfield on the other. Is this right? If these teams make it to the semi's, Beechwood would host Mayfield right?

The NCC game is not going to shed much light on how a Mayfield/Beechwood game would play out IMO. You have seen Mayfield, so you tell me. Based on what I have heard from you and others Mayfield is a speed team. NCC is a big power team. Beechwood has struggled with the big power teams because they are a speed team. When I heard Mayfield was built around speed, I started thinking Beechwood's chances of beating them went up.

I've never seen a Mayfield team this fast in the past 14 years and don't get it twisted, their lines are physical and big for 1A, I'd say going at least 200-225 all the way across and some more.

I put these up here like this because I think LCA and Mayfield have seperated themselves from the pack and you could argue one over the other all day long. Basically, it's just really close, imo...

 

Then Beechwood, although a couple of notches down from the Top 2, are, imo, clearly the next best team in the class...

 

Then theres another dropoff from the Beechies where all of the next 3 teams could be mixed and matched and I doubt there would be much complaint...

 

Then your next 3 are another small dropoff, but, could be swapped up or down or in between and there wouldn't be too much complaint...

 

Same with the last 5. Any of those could legitimately argue there case to be the Top 10 and theres little seperation in any of them...

I vote Mayfield #1 every week. I think in six weeks, they will prove me right.

 

I realize it's a "little" late in the game, but I would have liked to have seen 1st place votes (or total points) next to the respective teams, just to know how close the vote really is. ...And although most like the BluegrassPreps.com poll (including myself) over the Associated Press poll, it is nice to know what media outlets make up the poll. There "seems" to be equal representation across the state with the AP poll, whereas most of us on this board don't really know where the .com voters reside (not specifically, but in general). I'd bet my last dollar though that there is a heavy slant towards central & northern KY voters in these polls.

 

Here's an example. Ever since LCA's loss to LexCatch a few weeks ago, the AP put Mayfield at the #1 spot. A majority of the news outlets down here in far WKY (TV, radio, newspaper) have been calling Mayfield the number 1 team in the state for several weeks. While BGP is the foremost authority on high school sports, no one knows who's casting the ballet, so they just tell everyone what the AP dishes out. I'm not trying to slight the AP, because I realize there are some (but far from all) of those voters who are also BGP members. Just my 2 cents.

I assure you there is no slant toward NKY and CKY. The BGP Rankings are done by a panel that represents the entire state, including WKY. This panel represents all the areas of the state, more so then then the AP poll, I assure you. And is done by people who know Kentucky High School Football. That is why is a much better product.

 

The AP gives to much weight to records, if a team, not speaking of Mayfield, plays a week schedule and is 10-0, they are going to be number 1 in the AP. Case in point, Raeland was 10-0 last year, versus a decent schedule, and was ranked number 1 in the AP. Raceland did not win the Regional Championship, they should have but that is another issue, but Beechwood was number 1 in the BGP poll and won the State Championship, with Raceland at number 2. Who was correct?

There's no denying that there are fewer posters in this end of the state, but it's nice to know that those from WKY are included equally in the process. Thanks for the help. Can you shed any light on some of my other questions?

I'm not sure what other questions you have, I can't tell you what members are involved in the BGP Rankings, that is up to them if they wish to disclose that they are involved.

 

As for Mayfield over LCA, we just believe that LCA is the number one team in the state in 1A. There are many reasons for that, but most of it is schedule comparison and game performances. There is no slant away from Mayfield, it's just the way the panel sees it. I can tell you that only one member of the panel has ever ranked Mayfield at number one, everyone else has LCA at number one.
