I think a lot of people would agree with Clyde. I know I do. I have seen Ryle play and believed them to be the superior team. No offense to SK at all. On the contrary. This is a huge win IMO. And I think Clyde would agree that the lop-sided score is even more impressive. Congrats on a big win to Simon Kenton.

 

Had you seen SK play? I had watched both teams play in person, and find it hard to believe that you would believe Ryle to be the superior team if you had seen both teams play. I thought they (SK) were the far better team, and I thought Lawrence was much more mobile at QB, which really helped SK dominate Ryle. I thought the score could have been alot worse, but IMO the game was over at halftime.

I agree...that was some of the worst tackling at this level of football that I have ever seen. This lack of tackling was the major reason Ryle got pounded.

 

I thought play calling killed Ryle in the first half. It got better in the second half. Second half score Ryle. 29 - S.K. 27.

The better team won. But the facts are as of yesterday Ryles strength of schedule is a 22.9 and S.K. 18.8. From here on out Ryles number will go up and S.K.s down. Ryle is playing Highlands twice this year becouse some other NKY teams would not play them. So if S.K. wanted to, they could have proven it on the field. We will never know. Just a couple facts.

SK dominated Ryle at the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. Also, I know that Coach Woolf will be furious this week at Ryle diving instead of driving through and tackling. I was on the end of a tirade at NewCath and we did about 200 up-downs. Heaven help Ryle's defensive starters come their next practice.

 

I wonder if the coaches will do those up downs along with the players?? I'm sure they will not!

I think people would agree that they were surprised at the lopsided score, and how SK physically abused Ryle. However, coming into this game, if you throught Ryle was the superior team, then you haven't seen SK play at all. I've seen both teams play this year, and IMO, they were even teams. I thought SK had the edge in the running game, and Ryle had the edge in the passing game.

I was even more stunned at the speed differential. I also believe that Miles Simpson is back to near 100%. His cuts were so much sharper than the Conner game and he ran a lot harder. That's huge for SK heading into the playoffs. And to the poster who said that SK had to run through St. X and Trinity to be considered the best team in NKY is ridiculous. I'm not saying that they are or they aren't. What I'm saying is that that is a horrible standard to hold any team to. Cincy St. X was the first team in 18 years to do that in back-to-back weeks. I don't believe that any team in KY (Highlands included) could pull that off. Highlands v. SK would be the best game in NKY this year. Highlands would win, but it would be the most interesting game in NKY.

I think that is an issue around Boone Co not just Union.

I did chuckle on the screen pass TD to Miles that put them up 42-7. Somehow the only Ryle defender within spitting distance of the play was Logan Carney who I'm guessing is in the 160 to 170 range. Coming at him were two big o-linemen including 296 pound Hansel. Heck, Hansel couldn't even find anyone to block since his partner took care of Carney (with a hold). Unless Ryle was in an all-out blitz I can't figure out where the other defenders were.

 

Alright since you opened Pandora's box, I thought there was a lot of holding going on by the O linemen of each squad. Now keep in mind as you are reading this that I'm a former O lineman, my eldest son is a former O lineman and my younger son currently is an O lineman. Holding is not something you will hear me comment often about because it usually never happens.

 

But man, watching the game on TV last night, the o linemen were getting away with just about any thing other than tackling. I noticed it more on SK's kids but that was probably only because I only watched the first half and they had the ball the majority of the first half it seemed like.

 

Elliott ran harder than I've ever seen him run. I've often scoffed about his ability to run through tackles and over tacklers because in the few games I'd watched him, he hadn't done much of it. But man he ran over and through some kids in the first half last night. I saw what people had been talking about. Tough kid.

 

Impressed with SK. They are much more balanced than last year. I commented to Henry during the first half that SK did the same thing to Ryle that Highlands did to X. Use the qb to offset the defensive focus on the star running back. Good job coach Marksberry.

 

That was a different Ryle team than I've seen this year. Perhaps it was because SK was so much better than Ryle, which they were last night. I'll leave it to the Ryle coaches to figure out why and get it straightened out.

I was certainly wrong about this score, but the best team in NKY would not have lost to Henry Clay.

Highlands had an open date they could not fill with a Northern Kentucky team and had to schedule Withrow. Simon Kenton had the same open date and scheduled Schroder Padea. I don't know all of the details, but...........

Difference in the game:

 

1. Lawrence's keepers - very well executed while Ryle's D was focused on swarming Simpson.

2. Weather - Ryle needed better weather, and how about some quick-fire passes to counter the blitzing linebackers?

3. Game plan - Ryle needed a better one for foul weather. SK had the 'right' one with two outstanding running backs - one or the other carrying the ball at all times.

4. 'THE NON-FUMBLE THAT WAS'. Not that is dictated the outcome of the game, but the officiating was unusually amateurish, not to mention the blatant hold on Carney on Simpson's screen pass run.

 

Highlands would have theirs hands full against SK, particularly now that Bardo is out. It is indeed a shame that those two teams aren't going to play this year. Both teams exhibit superior team speed on both sides of the ball and good size up front. SK should be brimming with confidence after last night. For Ryle, they now have 8-days to heal, prepare and make necessary adjustments so they can win their next two games.

 

Bottom line: Ryle needed to score on almost all of its possessions in order to win by outscoring SK because everyone knew going in SK would score a lot. Then perhaps Ryle could win as a result of superior special teams play, but the game was never close enough for that to matter and (again) the foul weather definitley hurt Ryle's O more than SK's, with lots of cold-handed receivers and not enough time in the pocket for Hemple in the first half. Making adjustments at halftime was simply too late in this one.

I thought it was a pretty well-officiated game. Remember, officials don't have the benefit of instant replay at this level and use very different "if in doubt" principles because of that fact.

 

It's pretty easy to ref a football game from the comfort of the couch with the DVR remote in hand. I know, I do it too.
