September 11, 200917 yr Despite the awful season, our boys finished 12th in the league in total defense last year. The secondary looks good, the linebackers young and active and the D-line experienced. We all know the offense is only going to be as good as the line allows, but what about the D? Your thoughts? Do they have what it takes to be an AFC North type defense?
September 11, 200917 yr No. They're definitely on the rise, but they aren't that good. They may have ranked 12th statistically in 2008, but they were not the 12th best defense.
September 11, 200917 yr I think that Roy Williams will help. I like his leadership and attitude, especially when he calls out Chad on Hardknocks. You need people on your team like that, it is something the Bengals seem to have been missing the last couple of years.

With the offense we had last year and the field position the defense was having to deal with so often and still being the 12th best defense is pretty impressive to me. They were 12th in total yards, and 14th in total points. I think they're on their way to a top 10 defense this year, especially if Carson stays healthy. If Carsons healthy, they score more points; Bengals score more points, more teams are coming from behind and throwing; more throws lead to more picks; more picks turns into possible touchdowns and great field position. Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall should be experienced enough this year to hold it down pretty well. I like this defense.
September 11, 200917 yr I would like to hope so. They had a great year last year considering how often they were on the field. They finally have someone with an attitude on the defensive side that can hopefully rub off on the others. The only downside of the defense is the lack of a pass rush. Geathers and Odom have done it before. Tank Johnson has done it before. Can they finally stay healthy, and put it all together this year is the main question.

Roy Williams can lead all he wants, but he's not very good at actually playing .

It's no guarantee that the Bengals offense will be all that good, with the questions on their O-Line.

Once teams got a comfortable lead, they didn't have to open their offense up. They could afford to just play it safe and grind out a win. I think the Bengals defense will be pushed more this season because I think the offense will be more dynamic. Teams won't be able to pencil in a W once they score 2 TD's. But, I'm not saying the Bengals defense isn't good or isn't on the way up. I think they are. But, they've still got a ways to go to reach the level of Baltimore and P'burgh. New England New York Jets Baltimore Pittsburgh Tennessee San Diego New York Giants Philadelphia Washington Minnesota There's 10 defenses that I absolutely would take over Cincinnati. And, there's quite a few more that are right in the mix with Cincinnati...could be better, could be worse, depending on how things play out. Miami Buffalo Houston Indianapolis Jacksonville Green Bay Chicago Carolina New Orleans Arizona San Francisco Seattle I see the Bengals as a middle of the pack defense in the NFL.

I agree they have a long way to go to match those defenses but at the same time I believe they're a healthy top 10 defense.
September 11, 200917 yr I agree they have a long way to go to match those defenses but at the same time I believe they're a healthy top 10 defense. Of the 10 defenses I listed first, assuming all are healthy, who would you rate below the Bengals and why?
September 11, 200917 yr I think a huge key is the health of Hall and Joseph. Cincy doesn't have a ton of depth at CB, and I believe they improved their defensive roster plus the schedule isn't as loaded (on paper). I think they will be in the top half of the league.
September 11, 200917 yr Before I start I'd like to clarify IMO defense is all about total yards and total points. I'm not going by just pass D and rush D. Cincinnati - 12th total yards, 19th total points, more experienced and added some fantastic additions in the offseason. There's really only 3 teams that are comparable and that's because Cincy was outside the top 10 so it's not too difficult to find 10 teams that are better. New York Jets - Gave up 4 less yards per game last year than the Bengals, also gave up 8 less points on the year which is 1/2 of a point per game less. Very similar Defenses, hard to say ones better than the other. San Diego - Gave 1 total yard more per game than the Bengals, and allowed only 17 points more, or 1.1 point better per game. Also similar stats. Minnesota - Gave 2 points less per game.
September 11, 200917 yr Of the 10 defenses I listed first, assuming all are healthy, who would you rate below the Bengals and why? New England, Washington, and the Jets are three teams that I think the Bengals can be ahead of to be in the top 10 defenses this year that you listed.
